Streets Technician I
Annual Salary Range: $33,601 - $52,920
Performs a variety of heavy manual tasks in the maintenance and repair of sidewalks, streets, and gutters; breaks pavement, pours and shovels asphalt, tamps and smooth's asphalt; digs out holes with manual and automatic digging tools and may operate a compactor. This individual may also operate a variety of small trucks, tractors, and motorized hand tools. The position is considered essential and may be required to work overtime during severe weather, as well as to be on call for emergencies outside of normal work hours. A valid NC drivers' license and excellent driving record are required.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
- An employee in this class is classified as an essential employee.
- An employee in this class performs a variety of semi-skilled manual tasks not requiring a high degree of manipulative skills or previous experience.
- Work assignments are repetitive in nature, and once learned can be completed without difficulty under general supervision.
- Employee in this class are required to work with some independence and to utilize skills which require substantial on the job training.
- Work is reviewed by superiors to determine that proper work methods are being followed and that instructions are being carried out correctly.
- An employee in this class performs a variety of heavy manual tasks in the maintenance and repair of sidewalks, streets, driveways, and gutters; breaks pavement, pours and shovels asphalt, tamps and smoothes asphalt; digs out holes with manual and automatic digging tools and operates a compactor.
- The public contact requirement with the street divisions and the job hazards are significant classification factors, as well as inner departmental relationships.
- An employee must possess the ability to read and understand catalogues, manuals and manufactures’ instructions.
- The potential for on-the-job accidents and injuries for this class of employee is significant; therefore, the ability to follow safety procedures is a job requirement.
ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK
- Ability to follow safety guidelines.
- Performs or assists in the maintenance to include asphalt crack pouring, pot hole repair, leveling, grinding, new pavement installs and pavement markings as needed.
- Performs or assists in the maintenance to include concrete sidewalk repairs/installations, concrete curb repairs/installs, concrete pad repairs/installation and concrete grinding of any trip hazards.
- Assists with a variety of semi-skilled manual tasks with other Public Works Departments when needed.
- Assists in repairs and installs of storm drain lines by cutting pipes, proper connections, laying pipe, and manual digging and tamping.
- Assists in cleaning and unclogging storm drain lines, manholes and catch basins.
- Assists in trench excavation, establishing protective barriers, guides heavy equipment.
- Cleans ditches, gutters, culverts and other drainage structures.
- Cleans up vehicles/equipment/tools, shop area and work sites.
- Assists in establishing traffic control to include barricades, cones, all signage, & vehicle traffic flagging.
- Makes and installs street name signs, traffic control signs. Maintenance of all town owned signs with straightening, cleaning, and graffiti removal.
- Assists in the salt brine operations of making and placing. Assists in all winter clearing activities of snow, ice, and downed trees in roadways.
- Assists in performing solid waste collections; to include recycle, solid waste, yard debris, bulky items, and animal carcasses when needed.
- Operates a variety of small trucks, tractors, pavement sprayer, curbing machine, road saws, jack hammer, tamps, some motorized hand tools, and other tools & equipment as needed.
- May be required to perform or assist in the maintenance within confined spaces.
- All other assigned duties.

- Some knowledge of the hazards and applicable safety requirements of equipment and machines used.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions.

- Ability to maintain effective working relationships with other employees.
- Ability to operate hand tools and other appropriate equipment.
- Mechanical ability and aptitude.
- Must be physically able to bend, lift and carry up to 75 lbs. and climb ladders.
DESIREABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
- Ability to perform assigned tasks.
- Some experience with tools and manual work is preferred, and ability to read and write is necessary.
- High school graduate preferred or any combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
• Possession of a valid North Carolina driver’s license with an excellent driving record as well as the ability to obtain a CDL driver’s license during the probationary employment period.
