$35,798 - $51,590 depending on experience.

Position Summary
Incumbents in this position perform a variety of entry level skilled duties related to the construction, installation, maintenance and repair of city streets, street signing and warning devices. Operates specialized heavy equipment and performs cement work on flat surfaces, curbs and gutter; grouts surfaces and joints.

Works under the general supervision of the Street Superintendent
Essential Functions (Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following tasks, knowledge, skills, and other characteristics. - Operates specialized equipment such as single & tandem axle dump trucks, grader, water truck, frontend loaders, backhoe and other similar equipment in the construction, maintenance and repair of various street department projects and sites.
- Operates light equipment such as sweepers, mowers, asphalt rollers, cement mixers, pickups, compacting equipment, crack sealer, tack machine and various hand and power tools as needed.
- Performs installation of various types of road signs; follows established federal standards and codes in placement of signing; selects posts, digs post holes using power post hole digger or auger; mixes and pours cement, sets posts; operates striping machine in striping of roads, parking lots, curbs and designated areas; assists in the fabrication and maintenance of barricades; may fabricate and build street signs; follows established standards and codes in the placement of letters on aluminum signs.
- Performs preventative maintenance on equipment by checking oil and grease levels, etc., makes minor mechanical repairs as needed.
- Transports and deposits various construction materials such as sand, gravel, dirt, etc.; performs hot mix patching, storm drain cleaning, repair and construction, gravel street maintenance, street sweeping, cold mix patching, debris collection, etc.
- Performs general maintenance functions such as painting, carpentry, plumbing, routine electrical, pouring and finishing cement and similar duties; maintains, cleans and repairs tools and equipment.
- Performs a variety of ground maintenance and construction work requiring the use of hand and power tools, such as building forms, framing projects, etc.
- Identifies need to initiate various aspects of spraying programs related to the prevention or eradication of pests, fungus and insects harmful to plants, trees, shrubs and other environs; selects appropriate chemicals and combinations to accomplish task; maintains records of spraying activities; assures chemicals are properly stored and used in conformity with city, state or federal regulations; operates spraying equipment.
- Assists with other department projects as needed.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
1. Qualifications, Education and Experience
a. High school diploma or equivalent AND
b. One (1) year of progressively responsible experience in a field directly related to above duties.
c. Possess and maintain a valid Utah Driver's License throughout employment.
d. Successful completion of a pre-employment drug screening.
2. Special Qualifications
a. Possession of or the ability to obtain a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class A or B with the required endorsements within 90 days of hire date.
b. Possession of or the ability to obtain a Utah Department of Transportation certification in construction signing and flagging within 120 days of hire date.
c. All accredited certification must be kept current. Failure to do so may result in loss of position.
3. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of drawings and specifications, grades, machinery, materials and methods of constructing roads, drainage systems, culverts, etc.
- Safety standards related to road construction.
- Ability to safely operate heavy equipment of various kinds under varying conditions.
- Ability to make minor repairs on assigned vehicles and perform equipment maintenance and repair as required.
- Perform heavy physical labor in varying conditions.
- Knowledge of legal liabilities associated with street construction.
- Ability to work from blue prints.
- Knowledge of civil engineering standards related to street construction and drainage.
- Right-of-way laws and ordinances.
- Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
- Develop and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, elected officials, local agencies and the general public.

- Position requires incumbent to perform moderate physical activity. Employees must regularly lift, carry, push, pull, and/or move objects weighing up to 50 pounds to 100 pounds.
- May have uncomfortable working positions such as stooping, crouching and bending. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to use hands to finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools or controls; and reach with hands and arms. Employees are occasionally required to climb or balance; employees are frequently required to stoop, kneel, squat and crouch and occasionally crawl in confined areas; employees frequently walk, sit and stand and talk and hear. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision and the ability to adjust focus.
- Will work primarily outside in the field with exposure to elements such as heat, cold, dampness, fumes, noise, dust, dirt and grease.
- Physical ability to operate a vehicle to travel from site to site; operate different heavy equipment requiring repetitive hand movement and fine coordination.
- Considerable exposure to stress as a result of human behavior, including dealing with unpleasant, angry or discourteous individuals as part of the job requirements.
Condition of Employment
Employee may be required to work extended or irregular hours such as nights, weekends and holidays. Hurricane City employment can require employees to occasionally work outside of their normal job duties to assist with city sponsored events and/or projects. The employee is expected to forgo normal work duties to assist with the completion of these events and/or projects. In the event of an emergency, employees are required to work to provide for the safety and well-being of the public, including the deliver and restoration of vital services.
