Position Description
(Grade 6)
Summary of Position
Performs skilled work in the operation of medium-duty maintenance and construction equipment and does related work as required.
Organizational Relationships
1. Reports to: Street Department Superintendent
2. Directs: May supervise Maintenance Workers
3. Other: Works with other employees and assists other departments.
Essential Duties
• Specializes in street maintenance, including construction tasks, equipment repairs, patching and crack-sealing, and operating the cinder truck and jackhammer.
• Performs manual labor, including digging and shoveling.
• Assures that Service Orders are completed promptly.
• Available for emergency work: evenings, weekends, and holidays.
• Performs other related duties as requested, directed, or assigned.
• Operates medium-duty earth-moving and excavating equipment for trenching, backfilling, and grading.
• Operates lifting and loading equipment for construction or general facilities operations and may supervise the accompanying crew.
• Operates loaders, plows, and related equipment to plow and remove snow and ice from city streets and alleys.
• Services equipment as required for daily operation.
• Performs other duties as required, assigned, or directed.
• Work may require heavy physical exertion under adverse weather conditions with exposure to dust, fumes, smells, and other hazardous or disagreeable elements.
Job Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
• Knowledge of the use and handling of engineering construction materials.
• Knowledge of earthwork construction.
• Knowledge of traffic laws, hazards, and applicable safety rules and precautions involved in equipment operation.
• Skill and experience in operation and maintenance procedures for various construction equipment.
• Ability to safely and efficiently operate construction equipment, such as dump trucks, rollers, backhoes, loaders, and sweepers, entailing considerable skill in operation.
• Ability to carry out written and verbal instructions and to work independently or with the crew.
• Ability to work varied hours, weekends, and holidays as required.
• Possession of a current, valid CDL License issued by the State of Arizona.
