The Sterile Processing Technician is responsible for maintaining instruments and equipment in an optimal fashion. Also responsible for preparing instrumentation, sterile supplies and OR and RR equipment for the surgical patient and the surgery center's physicians.
REQUIREMENTS
- Demonstrates cooperative work attitude toward and with co-employees, management, patients, visitors and physicians.
- Maintains Certification in CPR.
- Maintains regular attendance.
- Possesses strong initiative to get daily work finished and processed.
- Has the ability to communicate effectively with physicians and other staff members.
- Follows HIPAA guidelines to ensure patient confidentiality.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Cleans, wraps, and sterilizes instrumentation according to facility policy.
- Assists with turnovers.
- Maintains regular attendance, time off from work is according to facility policy.
- Wraps, identifies, and sterilizes all instrumentation, supplies, and equipment as necessary to maintain Central Supply in an orderly/ organized fashion.
- Keeps supplies orderly on Central Supply shelving.
- Continues assigned monthly routines.
- Assists co-workers with daily preparation for next day's schedule to include pulling supplies and instrumentation.
- Is available and flexible to work in the OR and procedures areas as needed throughout the day.
- Performs all other duties assigned by supervisor.
- Participates in the quality improvement process and activities including the areas of safety, adherence to guidelines for cleaning/decontamination of the center, adherence to guidelines for sterilization of instrumentation and supplies, patient satisfaction, physician satisfaction, compliance with OSHA standards, and risk management.
- Demonstrates competency in performing job tasks and in operating equipment on an annual basis.
RESPONSIBILITY FOR ASSETS
- Maximum care and caution required when handling surgical equipment and instruments.

WORKING CONDITIONS (PHYSICAL)
- Standing and/or walking a considerable amount of duty time.
- Pushing, pulling, lifting and positioning light to heavy equipment and patients.
- Sitting, standing and walking a considerable amount of the time.
WORKING CONDITIONS (ENVIRONMENTAL)
- Works in well-lighted and ventilated area with complicated equipment, some of which is hazardous in nature.
- May be exposed to patients who have communicable diseases.
EMPLOYMENT VARIABLES
- Variable work hours depending on surgery schedule.
- Subject to change according to administrative decision.
- Staff is expected to leave when work is completed.
- The Surgery Center will not be open on major holidays.
QUALIFICATIONS
- High school graduate or GED preparation required.
- Certification in CPR training.
JOB KNOWLEDGE
- Knowledge of sterilization procedures, aseptic technique, and maintenance and care of equipment.
- Knowledgeable in basics of safety precautions.
