Overview:
Acts as a Control Engineer by providing support of building automation systems (BAS); maintains “Delta V”, “Siemens”, “Automated Logic”, and “Alpha Controls” BAS on the Capitol Complex; updates operating sequences for air handlers, VAV’s, chillers, cooling towers, boilers and makeup air units; provides training to Engineers on electronic control systems operations; trains mechanical staff on building automation systems, operates, maintains, renovates and repairs a variety of mechanical systems including all types of boiler control systems and all other mechanical systems by performing routine work on heating, ventilating and air conditioning systems. Performs start up on frequency drives; updates obsolete fan coil controls in the Capitol complex; troubleshoots and repairs all electronic and pneumatic actuators for heating and cooling systems. Serves as backup in the absence of the day shift Engineers as assigned by Management.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Diagnose and repair complex building automation system (BAS) malfunction’s, requiring extensive knowledge and the ability to test and write modifications in multiple languages of systems software, including “Siemens”, “Automated Logic”,” DeltaV” and “Alpha Controls”. Full support on building automation systems.
- Provides sketches of field changes and discrepancies for engineering corrections and drawings. Would do startup on frequency drives installed in –house by electricians. Communicates with building engineer upon arrival and before leaving the work site. Meets regularly with building engineer to become familiar with operating problems. Keeps building engineer informed on the nature of service provided outstanding issues and recommends system enhancements, upgrades and or repairs.
- Serves as backup to the 6:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. shift, for Stationary Engineers, when Engineer is absent, and assigned by Management, no more than 3 days a month total.
- Manages assigned work to meet professional execution, of time and satisfaction. Interfaces with project manager or subcontractors on projects to coordinate activities as required in an ethical and professional manner. Update the obsolete fan coil controls on the Capitol Complex.
- Adheres to all safety standards and provides safety awareness on work sites. Install drives on cooling towers and operate and maintain costs. Set up make-up water controls for cooling towers. May provide training to engineers on electronic control systems operations. Train mechanical workforce on building automation systems. Provides support to the mechanical staff on non-complex and non-critical equipment.
- Compiles job documentation and punch lists. Maintain “Siemens”, “Automated Logic”, “DeltaV” and “Alpha Controls” BAS on the Capitol Complex. Conducts extensive self-study (reading, research and practice) to improve and maintain technical proficiency in BAS company’s product lines. Completes certifications as required by the BAS company. Write updated operating sequences for air handlers, cooling towers, VAV’s and makeup air units.
- Operates and maintains, renovates and repairs a variety of mechanical BAS including all types of mechanical systems by performing routine work on boilers and steam control systems; heating, ventilating and air conditioning control systems; building automation systems.
- Performs other duties as required or assigned within the scope of the class.
Education and Experience
Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to the completion of high school and either completion of an apprentice program necessary to qualify as journeyman or four (4) years of experience in power plant operation and in firing high-pressure stationary boilers. Requires CFC Certification under USFPA Section 608 rules.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Requires extensive knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques used in the operation of high-pressure coal, gas or oil fired boilers and their auxiliaries.
- Requires working knowledge of the operation of electrical generating equipment.
- Requires ability to direct the work of employees engaged in the maintenance of mechanical systems.
- Requires the ability to keep simple records.
- Requires skill in the control and regulation of high-pressure boilers.
- Requires skill in the use of tools and equipment used in maintaining power-generating equipment.
- Requires ability to observe and judge the operating efficiency of power generating and allied machinery.
- Requires the ability to perform the physical functions and tasks associated with a journeyman stationary engineer including, but not limited to, overhead work, ladder climbing, squatting, kneeling and constant walking.
- Requires ability to lift up to twenty (20) pounds constantly, up to 50 pounds frequently, and over 100 pounds occasionally.
- Requires ability to push/pull up to 100 pounds occasionally.
- Requires the ability to follow oral and/or written instructions.
- Requires willingness to travel and possession of a valid Illinois driver’s license as required by individual positions within the class.
