A Brief Overview
Supervises technologists/technicians and section operation in one of the following laboratory sections: Blood Bank, Clinical Chemistry, Hematology (including Coagulation and Urinalysis), Stat Lab, Immunochemistry, and Microbiology (including Serology).
What you will do
- Selects test methodology (with Administrative and Medical Directors) most appropriate for the clinical use of test results.
- Analyses and coordinates work load and prepares daily departmental assignments relative to work flow. Utilizes laboratory equipment for optimal work flow and maximal productivity.
- Verifies tests procedures performed and establishes lab’s test performance characteristics, including precision and accuracy of each tests and test system.
- Establishes quality control program appropriate for the testing performed and establishes the parameter for acceptable levels of analytic performance and ensuring that these levels are maintained throughout the entire testing process from the initial receipt of specimen, through sample analysis and reporting of test results.
- Assures staff compliance with policies and procedures. Maintains compliance with regulatory standards for section operation.
- Identifies training needs and assures that each individual performing tests receives regular in-service training and education appropriate for the type and complexity of Laboratory services performed.
- Conducts regular staff meetings which are documented with minutes.
- Evaluates and documents competency of all testing personnel (semi-annually for first year of employment, annually or before new procedures are introduced thereafter) and assures that the staff maintains their competency to perform test procedures and report test results promptly, accurately and proficiently.
- Evaluates staff competency based upon direct observation of routine test performance, including patient preparation, specimen handling, processing and testing. Ensures that staff properly records and reports test results and properly reviews intermediate test results, worksheets, quality control records, proficiency testing results and preventative maintenance records.
- Directly observes instrument maintenance and function checks. Assesses test performances by testing previously analyzed specimens, internal blind testing or external proficiency testing samples.
- Develops written section policies and procedures in conjunction with Administrative and Medical Directors.
- Prepares staff work schedules for section. Maintains good employee relations. Discusses grievances and settles or refers to proper authority.
- Assures for cleanliness and order of the section and the care, calibration and maintenance of the equipment.
- Maintains adequate inventory of equipment, reagents and supplies. Prepares reagents, if necessary.
- Supervises maintenance of section records. Collects statistical data and prepares reports as required, such as monthly statistical tallies, quality control data, quality assurance reviews, instrument maintenance and repairs.
- Assists in analysis of section costs and preparation of section operating and capital budgets.
- Enrolls in appropriate modules, participates and monitors performance of CAP and State (HHS approved) proficiency testing and analysis of results with corrective action..
- Evaluates work performance of section personnel and participates in hiring, disciplining and terminating personnel.
- Evaluates and implements new procedures and methodologies to improve laboratory services and contain cost.
- Participates in programs for continuing education and hospital in-services.
- Keeps current in field through literature, attendance at workshops and seminars and membership in professional organizations.
- Accurately authorizes overtime of section personnel.
- Effectively represents section and Lab at meetings.
- Respects patient and employees confidentiality.
- Performs special procedures of complex and difficult nature in addition to the routine clinical determinations and has a thorough knowledge of difficult principles, procedures and techniques and the ability to make independent judgments on the basis of scientific knowledge.
- Is responsible for training of MLT students or designates training to appropriate section personnel.
- Participates in holiday, weekend and emergency call on a rotating basis.
Education Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree In Medical Technology, Chemistry, Biology, or related life sciences. Required
Experience Qualifications
- 7-9 years 6+ years of experience as a Medical Technologist in a clinical environment. Required
Licenses and Certifications
- ASCP - Medical Technologist MT(ASCP) certification Upon Hire Required and
- Specialty certification Upon Hire Preferred
