POSITION SUMMARY:
This Staff Scientist position provides direct research support at the senior professional level by being responsible for small and large, complex research projects that constitute major aspects of several larger research projects. This position will work independently in the James P. Wilmot Cancer Institute in Dr. Clive Zent’s Laboratory. Dr. Zent’s lab is focused on understanding the mechanisms by which the innate immune system kills malignant lymphocytes ligated with unconjugated monoclonal antibodies (mAb). Studying the role of macrophage hypophagia as it pertains to incomplete clearance of chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) cells with mAbs. Dr. Zent’s laboratory is also interested in defining the microenvironment populations in splenic B-cell lymphomas.
This Staff Scientist position will undertake project development and management at the senior professional level by assuming responsibility for complex research projects that constitute major aspects of several larger research projects and assist with regulatory compliance for all aspects of the laboratory. This position will work independently; supervise junior laboratory technicians, undergraduate students, pre-doctoral students, post-doctoral and medical fellows who join the research laboratory.
**SUPERVISION:**
This individual reports directly to the principal investigator, Drs. Clive Zent and Charles Chu. This position requires independent judgment in experimental planning and design as well as to the ability to troubleshoot and modify experimental methods accordingly. Furthermore, it will be necessary to accurately interpret results and analyze data to ensure the progression of research projects.
**TYPICAL ASSIGNMENTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:**
In addition to project development and management, this position requires oversight of the laboratory and active collaborations. The position will require extensive experience in molecular and cell biology, organizational independence, an ability to work collaboratively with a diverse group of students, post-docs, and supervising the techniques of research technicians using a range of experimental systems and techniques.
This individual will be involved in several core research projects within the scope of the lab outlined above, including oversight and training of students, fellows and post-docs participating in the projects. This position will require an ability to support all of these projects in multiple capacities. Additionally, the position will require the intellectual development and management of a primary research project that will in all its aspects, be directly organized, controlled, and executed by the staff scientist. As such, independence, a strong work ethic and focus on details will be critical. This requires a capacity to design, organize, and analyze experimental data that will serve as an invaluable tool in the publication of papers in scientific journals and future funding opportunities. This individual will remain abreast of current literature in this field and to take the initiative in preparing data for publication in peer-reviewed journals and in presenting this data at major conferences. A high level of competence in independent decision making and interpersonal skills will be critical to success in the role.
**TYPICAL ASSIGNMENTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:**
**Laboratory Oversight/Management: (20%)**
+ Collaborate with Drs. Zent and Chu to review on a weekly basis the progress of all projects in the Zent laboratory. Collaborate with Dr. Chu to oversee laboratory budget for supplies.
+ Advance and carry on collaboration with other researchers at outside institutions. The ability to maintain relationships with trainees, other research personnel and collaborators inside and outside the University is essential to the productivity and efficiency of the laboratory.
+ Project Management/Scientific Techniques: (30%)
+ Maintain standard of rigor and reproducibility for the lab including standardization of data analyses from multiple University core facilities and other departments including Pathology, Vaccine Biology and Immunology, and Flow Cytometry Core.
+ Research literature to design and develop methods and resolution of technical problems in the evaluation of the appropriateness of techniques used in experimental protocols.
**Bench-top: (50%)**
Independently design, perform, troubleshoot and interpret data emerging from experiments in molecular/cancer biology including flow cytometry analysis and cell sorting, in vitro assays including co-culture experiments, complement dependent cytotoxicity (CDC), Antibody-dependent cellular _cytotoxicity_ ( _ADCC_ ), antigen-dependent cellular phagocytosis (ADCP), and live-cell, time-lapse confocal microscopy.
Independently design, perform, troubleshoot and interpret data emerging from experiments on the role of cancer stem cells and their interaction with the bone marrow microenvironment in myeloid neoplasms.
+ Designs and directs small, complex research projects or major aspects of larger research projects; or works independently in a phase of research of a complex project **.**
+ Designs research projects or sub-projects, contributes to writing of research proposals, prepares regulatory documentation required for performance of research. Writes protocols for the conduct of research, which include: purposes of study, design of experiments, lists of materials and methods to be used and the schedule of activities.
+ Analyzes and evaluates experimental data and interprets results within the scope of the study; assesses the importance of findings in relation to the general research program. Prepares written reports on all phases of laboratory work involved in research projects. Contributes to the design, interpretation and final writing of research publications – thereby meeting expectations for co-authorship of scientific publications.
+ Keeps abreast of trends in field of interest by reading current research literature, abstracting scientific articles of value in the prosecution of research problems, and attending and presenting at scientific meetings, seminars and research conferences.
+ Develops and installs operating procedures for the laboratory, and independently operates complex equipment. Develops and modifies test methods; selects procedures for data collection and handling; develops or utilizes computer programs for conversions and statistical treatment of data.
+ Directs the gathering of research materials, supplies, equipment and apparatus and experimental. Coordinates service support: repair of equipment, requisitioning of supplies and research materials and minor construction.
+ Interviews, trains, supervises and evaluates staff. Directs initial training as well as continuous skill development of staff/trainees in laboratory techniques and instrumentation procedures. Counsels staff/trainees on technical problems; advises and assists staff/trainees with special research projects.
+ Develops and controls research project budgets in consultation with supervising faculty. Is responsible for research project budget reports and records. Recommends expenditures for major laboratory equipment and construction. Authorizes expenditure for expendable supplies and maintenance.
+ Evaluate the performance of research equipment, making design changes or developing new approaches for its use.
**REQUIREMENTS:**
Doctoral degree with major course work in the field of assignment and a minimum of 2-5 years of relevant postdoctoral training.

**Pay Range**
Pay Range: $50,000 - $100,000 Annual
