A nonprofit organization committed to providing access to justice for individuals and families is currently seeking skilled and dedicated Staff Attorneys with experience in landlord-tenant litigation to join our clients team in New York. This is a remote role- work from home 9-5pm with the exceptions of planned court days.
Position Overview:
As a Staff Attorney in the Public Service Department, you will represent tenants in landlord-tenant disputes, including eviction proceedings, housing code violations, rent overcharge cases, and other housing-related matters. You will provide legal advocacy, negotiate settlements, and litigate cases in the New York City Civil Court and Housing Court in the Bronx. You will work directly with clients to secure and protect their housing rights, while contributing to a broader mission of advancing justice for underserved communities.
Key Responsibilities:
- Represent tenants in landlord-tenant litigation, including eviction defense, rent disputes, housing code violations, and tenant organizing efforts.
- Provide legal advice and counseling to tenants regarding their rights and responsibilities under New York State and NYC housing laws.
- Appear in Bronx Housing Court for hearings, motions, and trials.
- Draft legal documents, including motions, complaints, settlement agreements, and court filings.
- Negotiate favorable settlements and work towards resolving cases efficiently.
- Advocate for clients in administrative hearings or other government proceedings related to housing issues.
- Stay informed of changes in housing law and legal trends affecting tenant rights in New York City.
- Collaborate with other attorneys, paralegals, social workers, and community partners to offer holistic legal assistance.
- Participate in outreach and education efforts to inform the public about tenant rights and legal resources available.
Qualifications:
- Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school and admitted to practice in New York State.
- Minimum of 1 year of trial experience in landlord-tenant law or housing litigation.
- Strong knowledge of New York City rent regulations, housing codes, and tenant protections under NYC, NYS, and federal law.
- Bilingual (Spanish/English) is a plus, but not required.

Pay:$70,000.00 - $110,000.00
