Sr Underwriter – Life Sciences
Hybrid New York City or Red Bank, NJ
This is your opportunity to join AXIS Capital as we enter the Life Science Market. This new practice will focus on Products Liability, Professional Liability, and Clinical Trials Liability for Pharmaceuticals and Medical Device clients. Our distribution will primarily be through retail and target Middle Market / Risk Management scale accounts.
The Senior Life Sciences Underwriter will be responsible for development and growth of the Life Sciences Practice and book at AXIS Capital, reporting into the Product Line Manager.
Candidate Profile
The ideal Senior Life Sciences Underwriter will be proactive and capable of working well in a dynamic environment, taking ownership of their responsibilities as they contribute to the development of a Life Sciences Practice.
The Senior Life Sciences Underwriter should possess hands-on technical underwriting experience with a successful track record within a top-tier Commercial Insurance Carrier focused on the Life Science vertical. This includes targeting Products Liability, Professional Liability, and Clinical Trials Liability within the Middle Market/Risk Management sector, while also developing a strong wholesale network.
Additionally, the candidate should have strong influence and collaboration skills, demonstrating the ability to implement new concepts and drive towards success, benefiting AXIS and supporting long-term strategic initiatives.
Work Profile
This role is ideal for individuals based in the Greater New York Metro Area who are looking for a hybrid working model of 3 days in the office (Manhattan or Red Bank, NJ) and 2 Remote. This role will require travel to attend industry and company events.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree required. CPCU, ARM, and/or ASLI designations are a plus.
- Underwriting or insurance experience in Life Sciences
- Self-Motivated individual with demonstrated leadership, organizational, and management skills.
- Demonstrated ability to influence and collaborate at all organizational levels, both internally and externally.
- Analytical thinker that can drive results utilizing prudent technical underwriting, coverage, and industry knowledge for this specialized business.
- Service and responsiveness are critical for this role.

Responsibilities:
- Develop & implement a countrywide marketing strategy for product launch.
- Bring personal experience and industry acumen to create an industry-leading product in collaboration with the team and Product Line Manager
- Responsibly build and maintain a profitable Life Sciences Products Liability and Professional Liability Book of business, using judgment and underwriting acumen.
- Leaning on established trusted relationships to collaboratively address customer needs.
- Stay up to date on national, state, and regional issues/regulations, industry activity and trends
- Become a visible thought leader in the life science segment
- Responsible for special underwriting projects and presentations as requested by leadership.
- Travel is associated with this role (e.g., Client and broker engagement meetings, annual renewal meetings, Industry conferences, Marketing Life Science Practice capabilities)
For this position, we currently expect to offer a base salary in and around $165,000. Your salary offer will be based on an assessment of various factors, including your specific experience and work location.
