Mechatronics and Sustainable Packaging is seeking a Sr. Research Scientist with experience in life cycle assessments (LCAs) and carbon accounting for industrial manufacturing to join our team. Our mission is to eliminate packaging waste from Amazon's supply chain to create better customer experiences while reducing our carbon footprint. Our team of engineers, scientists and product managers interface with core Operations, Amazon Fulfillment Technologies and Robotics, finance, procurement, and suppliers to develop solutions in pursuit of this objective. As a subject matter expert in LCAs with experience in evaluating emissions for industrial packaging manufacturing, you will drive future improvements to Packaging carbon metrics reporting. In this role you will both think big and execute, developing scalable tools and models that align with the GHG Protocol and improve the fidelity of our packaging emissions.
The Role:
As a Research Scientist in Sustainable Packaging, you will be responsible for building the framework and conducting assessments evaluating the sustainability impacts of supply chains, from manufacturing, to transportation, to consumer use and end-of-life. The ideal candidate will have industry experience conducting life cycle assessments (LCAs) of fiber-based packaging products, and detailed knowledge of manufacturing, design, development, and/or sourcing. This candidate will also possess excellent communication, negotiation and influencing skills to drive consensus across multiple stakeholders.
The successful candidate will have strong analytical skills and the ability to apply systems thinking to complex, fast moving problems. The candidate must have strong working-knowledge of scientific methods and international standards (GHG Protocol, ISO), with experience using Ecoinvent, GaBi, and USEEIO databases. The candidate should be comfortable working with imperfect data, identifying sources of uncertainty, and finding public data to fill the gaps where needed. The candidate will act as a Subject Matter Expert for packaging-related LCAs and carbon metrics, leading the development of research models and data analytics at scale. Key job responsibilities
- Manage LCA-related research projects through all stages: ideation, modeling, data collection, data analysis, data visualization, and reporting to provide sustainability insights and guidance at scale.
- Lead the development LCA tools and models in accordance with standards and regulatory requirements for packaging products
- Professionally communicate to senior business leaders
- Collaborate with data engineering and business intelligence teams to drive model/tool design and new feature creations.

Basic Qualifications
- PhD or equivalent in Engineering, Technology or Sustainability focused field
- 3+ years industry experience conducting sustainability research and/or driving sustainability improvements.
- Experience with sustainability foot printing and/or building and using Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) models.
- 1+ years of scripting or coding experience in Python, R, or any other similar scripting language.
- Competence in statistical analysis, databases and mathematical modeling.
Preferred Qualifications
- PhD and 5+ years of relevant academic or industry research experience conducting sustainability research and/or driving sustainability improvements.
- Knowledge of the GHG Protocol and other carbon accounting measures
- Experience with LCA data sources and commercially available tools.
- Published a peer-reviewed LCA study or report (e.g. thesis/dissertation, journal article, Environmental Product Declaration (EPD), etc.
- Experience building scalable analytics, models, and applications.
- Experience with AWS features (S3, Redshift) is a plus.
- Ability to write well-structured, easily maintainable, and well-documented code and desire to improve by iterating on code through peer review.
- Experience working with big, messy datasets and deriving inferences from them.
- Experience applying data-driven decision making across packaging or forest product industries.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $127,300/year in our lowest geographic market up to $247,600/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
