Position Summary | The University of New Mexico Comprehensive Cancer Center is seeking a Sr Research Scientist 1 to support cancer-focused population science research activities in the Behavioral Measurement and Population Science (BMPS) Shared Resource unit within the Cancer Control and Population Science research program.BMPS supports the development and implementation of cancer-focused population science and patient-centered research through a dedicated research infrastructure offering the following services: 1) assistance with survey design, including training in data collection and survey methods, 2) participant recruitment, tracking and follow-up, 3) qualitative and/or quantitative instrument design, creation of study specific data dictionaries and database management, 4) community engagement approaches, 5) grant development support in population science research design, 6) data entry and database management and 7) computerized tailoring of interventions. Under general supervision, the Sr Research Scientist 1 will: 1) assist in the day-to-day supervision and training of BMPS staff; 2) develop, maintain, and enforce internal policies and procedures for use by all BMPS staff; 3) create and maintain databases and tracking systems to record accomplishments and progress of BMPS itself; 4) provide direct study support to research projects as assigned; 5) prepare statistical and narrative reports and recommendations, and participate in the analysis and interpretation of data as appropriate. Please also include a section on your management style and philosophy. Duties and Responsibilities 1.Under minimal supervision, assists with the tracking and administrative efforts of BMPS. The duties include working with faculty and staff on internal processes (e.g., letters of agreement, tracking database) as well as identifying and maintaining current knowledge of technical developments, developing protocols and procedures, etc. 2.Provides oversight and leadership to junior staff. Includes regularly meeting with staff, providing guidance on collaborations, time management, scientific process, and development of documents and procedures. 3.Provides supervision and training of study staff (made up of UNM staff &/or students) to appropriately execute research protocols. 4.Collects, analyzes, and interprets data in field/community or clinic-based research projects. Prepares reports and or manuscript sections under investigator or supervisor oversight. 5.Works with BMPS leadership to develop unit operations and strategic plan for function and growth. 6.Coordinates and participates in budget meetings and strategic financial planning for the BMPS SR unit. Will assist Director in overall monitoring and will directly track and reconcile budget in the form of %FTE of each subordinate. 7.Miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned. The University of New Mexico Comprehensive Cancer Center is the Official Cancer Center of New Mexico and the only National Cancer Institute-designated Cancer Center in a 500-mile radius. Its more than 136 board-certified oncology specialty physicians include cancer surgeons in every specialty (abdominal, thoracic, bone and soft tissue, neurosurgery, genitourinary, gynecology, and head and neck cancers), adult and pediatric hematologists/medical oncologists, gynecologic oncologists, and radiation oncologists. They, along with more than 600 other cancer healthcare professionals (nurses, pharmacists, nutritionists, navigators, psychologists and social workers), provide treatment to 65% of New Mexicos cancer patients from all across the state and partner with community health systems statewide to provide cancer care closer to home. They treated almost 15,000 patients in more than 100,000 ambulatory clinic visits in addition to in-patient hospitalizations at UNM Hospital. A total of nearly 1,855 patients participated in cancer clinical trials testing new cancer treatments that include tests of novel cancer prevention strategies and cancer genome sequencing. The more than 123 cancer research scientists affiliated with the UNMCCC were awarded $38.2 million in federal and private grants and contracts for cancer research projects. Since 2015, they have published nearly 1000 manuscripts, and promoting economic development, they filed 136 new patents and launched 10 new biotechnology start-up companies. Finally, the physicians, scientists and staff have provided education and training experiences to more than 500 high school, undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral fellowship students in cancer research and cancer health care delivery. Minimum Qualifications | Master's degree; at least 5 years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified. Completed degree(s) from an accredited institution that are above the minimum education requirement may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis. |
