The Surgery Specialty leader maintains accountability for the defined specialty service in the OR. Delegates, directs, oversees and provides developmentally appropriate patient care. Initiates, supports and enforces work efforts that maximize quality, safety and service in the defined specialty service(s) in collaboration with Perioperative leadership and physicians. Practices professional nursing and promotes patient advocacy in accordance with the ANA Code of Ethics for Nurses. Maintains a current Ohio Nursing License.

Responsibilities:1. Collaborates with physicians in the defined specialty service(s) to maximize quality, safety and service:
- Facilitates the spirit of inquiry through evidence based practice.
- Actively communicates with physicians to plan for resource needs and utilization.
- Displays a proactive, positive customer service attitude.
- Maintains accurate preference and procedure cards.
- Maintains awareness of upcoming surgical cases and arranges adequate resources/resolves conflicts in advance of the surgery.
2. Maintains availability and working status of specialty service(s) instruments and equipment.
- Monitors and assures that OR staff demonstrate proper care and handling of instruments including placement of instruments on case carts.
- Ascertains that broken and/or missing instruments are promptly repaired or replaced.
- Collaborates with Materials Manager to identify need for loaner equipment when necessary.
- Recommends ordering of new equipment as needed.? Keeps staff aware of status of specialty equipment.
- Communicates closely with the Central Processing manager on the quality, quantity and functionality of instruments
3. Supervises Registered Nurses and Surgical Technicians on the defined specialty team(s) in the performance of their daily duties in the surgical suite and work areas:
- Demonstrates knowledge of unit/hospital policy and procedures, Perioperative mission statement, and holds staff accountable to the same.
- Resolves staff questions, problems or concerns.? Refers problems unable to handle to Clinical Leader.
- Evaluates employees on the defined specialty service(s) team.
- Role models outstanding patient care, customer service, teamwork and professionalism at all times.
- Collaborates with Clinical Leader to ensure appropriate team assignments.
4. Orders/assures adequate quantities of specialty supplies are available and does so in a cost conscious manner.
5. Coordinates new product evaluation for the defined specialty service(s):
- Establishes effective relationships with manufacturers reps.
- Maintains current knowledge of product innovations.
- Involves physician and nursing staff with product evaluations.
- Purchases and/or recommends for purchase based on objective feedback.
6. Provides input and recommendations for preparation and implementation of capital budget.
7. Coordinates and implements the orientation program for new personnel to the specialty service(s):
- Precepts/supervises the precepting of new employees to the specialty service(s)
- Demonstrates proper use and care of equipment and supplies.
- Provides Hands on experience with all pieces of equipment and specialty instrumentation.
- Teaches and enforces department standards for performance, patient care, safety and service.
- Informs other team members of orientees progress and goals when assigning them to work with an orientee
- Continually reviews and evaluates the individuals practical application of knowledge and skills, providing additional training as required.
- Assures appropriate documentation of orientation program via skills checklist.
- Suggests daily patient care assignment for orientee in collaboration with Education Nurse Specialist.
8. Directs the education programs for the Specialty Service(s):
- Identifies the team and departmental education and training needs for the Specialty Service(s)
- Plans, teaches or arranges for others to teach the education programs to meet the identified learning needs
- Makes available pertinent reference and reading materials.
9. Supports leadership decisions and initiatives in a positive manner.
10. Actively participates in the development and revision of department policies.
11. Provides direct patient care in the operating room.
- Performs all duties of personnel under his or her supervision in a competent manner.
- Communicates with other units and the FWR receptionist regarding OR room changes that affect the scheduled time of patients. Provides frequent updates of patient status to family members.
12. Assures 24 hours emergency case coverage for defined specialty area(s) (select specialties only).
13. Participates in regular, specialty and resource on-call coverage for the Operating Room.
Qualifications:KNOWLEDGE , SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED
1. Graduate of an approved school of professional nursing. Current licensure to practice as a RN in the State of Ohio. BSN required or ADN with BSN within 5 years of hire date; BSN strongly preferred.
2. Minimum one year experience in the OR demonstrating the ability to show clinical expertise in the perioperative care of children.
3. Must be willing to work at least 4 days per week.
4. Demonstrates professionalism, initiative, effective communication skills, critical thinking in decision making, and project management skills
MINIMUM PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
1. Must be able to see, hear, stand, walk, speak, read and perform manual tasks with or without accommodation, and care for oneself with little or no difficulty.
2. Must be able to independently lift up to 25 lbs. frequently.
3. Must be able to move or reposition patients of any weight or size with the assistance of another person(s) and/or equipment.
