SPECIALIST/SENIOR SPECIALIST, OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH & SAFETY, Research Compliance - Boston University

We are currently seeking an experienced Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) Senior Specialist to join our dynamic team. The ideal candidate will be responsible for ensuring a safe and healthy work environment across BU’s Medical Campus including Boston Medical Center, with a focus on Joint Commission required safety rounds, construction and general industry workplace safety practices. This position is primarily based on the Medical Campus while remaining flexible in assignments across all areas and departments served by EHS. The salary and position level are commensurate with the candidate’s educational background, training and experience.

Job Responsibilities

·Conduct health and safety inspections in medical campus facilities including the Goldman School of Dental Medicine and Boston Medical Center, and construction projects.

·Enter inspection and incident information using an EHS information management system to analyze data for tracking and trending for risk mitigation.

·Conduct follow-up inspections to ensure identified safety and compliance issues are resolved.

·Implement, evaluate, and continually improve required worker health and safety programs and assess compliance. Report trends and opportunities for improvement to the Director.

·Develop and conduct health and safety training programs for in-person sessions and for on-line modules.

·Review construction project scope and develop construction safety plans. Advise project managers on compliance with applicable local, state and federal standards and codes, and institutional policy.

·Conduct construction safety training to project managers, administrators, facilities staff, and construction workers.

·Coordinate and lead regulatory site inspections of facilities and constriction project sites with local and state inspectors.

·Implement fire safety plans including scheduling and leading fire drills. Review drill performance and identify opportunities for improvement.

·B.A./B.S. in a related field.

·3-5 years of environmental health and safety experience for the Specialist level position (grade 47); 5+ years of related experience for the Senior Specialist level position (grade 48).

·Experience in conducting health and safety audits.

·Familiarity with building code and systems.

·Experience with regulatory inspectors.

·OSHA HAZWOPER 40-hour Certification.

·Valid driver’s license.

·Basic computer skills (business systems, Microsoft Office, Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

·Proficient communicator and safety trainer.

·Successful completion of a pre-placement physical.

Preferred Experience

·Works towards an advanced degree in related field.

·Health and safety experience in the academic, research, or healthcare industry.

·A health and safety certification (ASP, CSP, CHSP, CIH, CHMM).

·Experience in construction safety.

·Experience in leading emergency management exercises or fire drills.

·Experience in managing health and safety permits and licenses or other required documentation.

·Experience in compliance inspections with external regulators.

·Experience in incident and accident investigations.
