Position Overview: A Special Education Teacher is responsible for creating and implementing educational plans and strategies tailored to meet the unique needs of students with disabilities. They collaborate with other educators, support staff, and parents to provide a supportive and inclusive learning environment.
Responsibilities:
- Assessment and Individualized Education Plans (IEPs):
- Conduct assessments to identify students' strengths and weaknesses.
- Develop and maintain Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) for each student, outlining goals, accommodations, and modifications.
- Instructional Planning:
- Adapt and create curriculum materials to meet the diverse needs of students with disabilities.
- Plan and deliver specialized instruction based on IEP goals and objectives.
- Classroom Management:
- Maintain a safe and inclusive classroom environment.
- Implement behavior management strategies to address challenging behaviors.
- Collaboration:
- Work closely with general education teachers to ensure students' integration into mainstream classrooms when appropriate.
- Collaborate with support staff, such as speech therapists, occupational therapists, and counselors, to provide comprehensive support.
- Progress Monitoring:
- Continuously assess and track students' progress toward their IEP goals.
- Make data-driven decisions to adjust instructional strategies as needed.
- Parent and Guardian Communication:
- Maintain open and regular communication with parents or guardians to discuss students' progress, goals, and strategies for support.
- Conduct parent-teacher conferences as necessary.
- Professional Development:
- Stay current with best practices in special education and relevant laws and regulations.
- Attend workshops and training to enhance teaching skills.
- Documentation:
- Maintain accurate and organized records of student progress, IEPs, and communication with parents and colleagues.
- Complete required paperwork for special education programs and services.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Special Education or a related field (Master's degree is often preferred).
- State teaching certification and special education endorsement.
- Knowledge of various disabilities and the ability to adapt teaching methods accordingly.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Patience, empathy, and the ability to build rapport with students with diverse needs.
- Organizational skills to manage IEP documentation and data.
- Understanding of special education laws and regulations, including the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).
