JOB SUMMARY AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Responsible for instrument decontamination, processing and terminal sterilization, inventory control and case preparation functions within the operating rooms, labor and delivery, GI Lab, emergency department, patient care units and affiliated Clinics.
2. Operates various instruments and equipment cleaning devices/equipment, (i.e., ultrasonic cleaner, plasma and steam sterilizers, heat sealers, decontaminator, sonic, etc.) Hand washes and cleans delicate instruments and equipment.
3. Maintains a clean, orderly and safe environment for patients and personnel.
4. Arranges and/or stores items on carts, shelves or in designated areas according to department procedures. Inventory, requests and receives supplies.
5. Answers inquiries and communicates effectively with others to achieve departmental objectives
6. Utilizes computer and related equipment to enter and retrieve information. Operates computerized data systems in accordance with departmental policies and procedures.
7. Maintains confidentiality in matters relating to patient/family, department and hospital information. Adheres to established department and organization policies (i.e. HIPAA, Confidentiality, and Compliance Policies).
8. Maintains established department policies and procedures, objectives, compliance/quality improvement program, patient safety, environmental and infection control standards.
9. Completes required continuous training and education, including department specific requirements. Responds to problems/opportunities to improve work environment and participates in unit based performance improvement activities which includes committees, monitoring and follow- up.
10. Serves as resource and/or preceptor to CPD/OR and other ancillary personnel to provide assistance as needed. Assists in the orientation and supervision of new staff members and students.
11. Provides coverage for relief and absences. Demonstrates flexibility to work nights, weekends and holidays to provide continuous departmental coverage as required.
12. Performs other duties and responsibilities as required.
MACHINES OR EQUIPMENT OPERATED: All equipment related to the functions of department including sterilizers, heat sealers, sonic and decontaminator.
JOB REQUIREMENTS:
EDUCATION: High school diploma or equivalent.
EXPERIENCE: Experience with care, handling, and assembly of surgical instrumentation, sterilization practices, and surgical supplies preferred.
LICENSE OR CERTIFICATION: International Association Healthcare Central Service Materials Management (IAHCSMM) Certification or Certification by Board as Central Processing Sterilization Technician (CBSPD) required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Advanced knowledge of Case Cart assembly
- Demonstrated organizational, communication (verbal/written), interpersonal and basic computer skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and meet required job demands with accuracy.
- Exhibits knowledge of all modalities of sterilization and CPD//OR processes and procedures.
- Available to work flexible shifts required.
- Ability to serve as a preceptor and resource to staff as well as customer populations.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Constant standing, walking, lifting, bending, pushing and pulling for instrument decontamination, processing and sterilization, fill carts and access supplies. Manual dexterity to clean and inspect instruments and performs data entry; work requires handling of cleaning chemicals and infectious waste. Possible exposure to blood/body fluids. May lift up to 150 pounds; Very Heavy Work - Exerting in excess of 70 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess of 75 pounds of force frequently and/or in excess of 30 pounds force constantly to move objects. (May be further defined as "with or without assistance.")
