Position Overview: As a Software Safety Engineer, you will play a pivotal role in championing safety throughout the software development lifecycle. You will work closely with cross-functional teams to identify and mitigate potential hazards, assess risks, and implement robust safety measures. Your expertise will be crucial in ensuring that our software products not only meet regulatory standards but also exceed industry best practices for safety and reliability.
Key Responsibilities:
Safety Assessment:
- Conduct comprehensive safety assessments for software systems, identifying potential hazards and assessing associated risks.
- Collaborate with development teams to analyze software architecture and design for safety implications.
Hazard Analysis:
- Lead hazard analysis activities, employing techniques such as FMEA (Failure Modes and Effects Analysis) to proactively identify and address potential safety issues.
- Work closely with system architects to ensure safety considerations are integrated into the design process.
Safety Standards Compliance:
- Stay abreast of industry safety standards and regulations, ensuring that software development practices align with relevant guidelines.
- Develop and maintain safety documentation in accordance with regulatory requirements.
Risk Mitigation Strategies:
- Devise and implement effective risk mitigation strategies, collaborating with development teams to integrate safety measures into the software development process.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance the overall safety culture within the organization.
Cross-Functional Collaboration:
- Collaborate with software engineers, system architects, and other stakeholders to promote a holistic approach to safety in software development.
- Conduct training sessions to raise awareness of safety principles and best practices among team members.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Software Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.
- Must have a bachelor's degree in engineering, or a related field.
- Must have 10+ years of recent and related work experience.
- In lieu of degree: Candidates with 14+ years of recent and related experience will be considered.
- Must maintain prior work experience providing direct in-line safety engineering support to NASA Programs/Projects.
- Must demonstrate proficiency in conducting Fault Tree Analyses (FTAs), Functional Failure Analyses (FFAs), Failure Modes and Effects Analyses (FMEAs), and/or similar types of system safety engineering analyses following NASA's specific guidelines and methodologies.
- Must possess extensive hands-on experience conducting and documenting hazard analysis results in System Safety Analysis Reports (SSARs) and Safety Data Packages (SDPs) from scratch!
- Must demonstrate ability to utilize computer-aided safety analysis tools such as CAFTA, Saphire, or similar analysis tools.
