Software/Electrical Engineer I – New Grad
Create functional embedded software for forklifts
Are you looking to design and develop embedded software, work hands-on with hardware, and see your results execute on a real-world device? This is a terrific opportunity to work in an Agile software environment, filling an important role at a stable organization. This is an entry level engineer position. Our ideal candidate is someone who can develop and grow under the mentorship of our experienced team and has had an embedded focus as part of their degree program.
Hyster-Yale Group is looking for talented embedded software engineers with a strong desire to learn and grow with our team in the Portland, Oregon area. This global development center develops materials handling solutions for the present and future. This role works in coordination with other development teams, to deliver software for new and current products.
Minimum Qualifications:
- BS in software engineering, computer engineering, electrical engineering with software emphasis, computer science with focus on embedded systems or mechanical engineering with focus on embedded systems
- C/C++ programming language experience
- Desire to embed control software within forklift products
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience in material handling, automotive or similar industries
- Proficiency with Simulink model-based development
- Awareness of data communications (e.g. J1939, CAN)
- Familiar with agile software development practices
- Exposure to configuration management tools such as Git or Subversion
- Exposure to interfacing with embedded devices
- Understanding Embedded software and Operating System concepts

- Ability and willingness to operate industrial equipment (e.g. Fork Truck)
- Driven to see tasks through to completion
- Innovative thinking, troubleshooting and problem solving.
- Ability to follow established procedures.
- Attentive to details to ensure accuracy in design and documentation.
- Exhibits good judgment and a realistic understanding of issues.
- Occasional travel may be required (less than 20% total time).
