The Inventory Placement team owns the systems that decide where in Amazon's fulfillment network to put inventory for the millions of products that Amazon sells. We build optimization models to make these placement decisions driven by signals such as target inventory based on forecasted customer demand, and the available capacity at various points in our network. Inventory placement is central to achieving Amazon's objectives to minimize the cost of fulfillment while offering selection to customers at the fastest possible delivery speeds. Our systems are built entirely in-house, and are on the cutting edge in automated large scale supply chain planning and optimization systems. We're simultaneously developing the science of supply chain planning and solving some of the toughest computational challenges at Amazon. Unlike many companies who buy existing off-the-shelf planning systems, we are responsible for studying, designing, and building systems to suit Amazon's needs.
You will lead a software development organization, and partner with product managers, business intelligence engineers, and research scientists in the Inventory Placement team to develop new features and models. You will design innovative ways to validate and gain insights from your systems' inputs and outputs, as well as focusing on the effectiveness of your system to meet business objectives.
A successful candidate will have an established track record of developing and delivering complex distributed software systems, a keen technical aptitude, excellent project management skills, solid communication skills, and be driven to achieve results. You also thrive in a fast-paced environment, have a focus on hiring and developing engineers, have strong skills in analyzing and improving software development processes, and are highly customer focused and is passionate about solving real business problems. Responsibilities include
- Drive prioritization and planning of projects and features
- Thinking big and working with leadership, cross teams and business stakeholders to define strategy and roadmap
- Facilitating the design of the architecture of these distributed and highly scalable systems to solve complex problems.
- Monitoring, validation, and operation of production services
- Owning the inputs and the business outcome through cultivating a culture of relentless auditing and metric monitoring, automatically where possible.
- Setting clear, measurable quality goals for the organization and collaborate across orgs to drive achieving them
- Mentoring and promoting team members and help leaders to grow the organization
Key job responsibilities
Your role as a Software Development Manager will be to bring your expertise in people management and technical leadership, to design and build systems that will improve our customer experience. The right candidate will thrive in a fast-paced, ambiguous environment with interactions across a wide variety of supply chain systems and demonstrate competence in multiple fields and skill sets. The responsibilities include: defining and driving multi-year technical vision, driving successful projects working with multiple stakeholders, developing a high performing engineering team, ensuring high quality deliverables, oversee architecture and design decisions, building relationships with existing and potential internal customers, working with Product Managers to define product roadmaps, etc.

About the team
The Inventory Placement team is responsible for the critical systems that determine the optimal placement of millions of products entering the Amazon Fulfillment Network. The team develops and operates the complex algorithms and models that decide where inbound inventory should be routed to FCs and IXD crossdock facilities. The team's work has a significant impact on Amazon's inbound operations, fulfillment costs, and seller experience.
The SDM in Inventory Placement team will get the opportunity to shape the vision, drive innovation and roadmap for these mission-critical systems.
Basic Qualifications
- 3+ years of engineering team management experience
- 7+ years of working directly within engineering teams experience
- 3+ years of designing or architecting (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience
- 8+ years of leading the definition and development of multi tier web services experience
- Knowledge of engineering practices and patterns for the full software/hardware/networks development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, certification, and livesite operations
- Experience partnering with product or program management teams
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in communicating with users, other technical teams, and senior leadership to collect requirements, describe software product features, technical designs, and product strategy
- Experience in recruiting, hiring, mentoring/coaching and managing teams of Software Engineers to improve their skills, and make them more effective, product software engineers

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $166,400/year in our lowest geographic market up to $287,700/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
