United States Steel is looking for an Innovation Construction Assembly Leader to join our office in Birmingham, Alabama. In this role, the incumbent will lead all assembly construction activities of residential modules on site, from foundation preparation to delivering the key to the home to the new owner. The role requires a strong understanding of the building construction process, project planning, on-site coordination and effective leadership skills.
This individual will be joining an innovation team that is developing a new-to-world construction technology that can revolutionize the way we build buildings. The incumbent will work closely with the Technical Project Leader, manufacturing team, architecture & engineering partners, real estate team and several contractors. As part of the innovation team, you will join in at the concept phase and be part of the deployment of technology in large scale. The role requires a proactive, responsive, highly motivated, and creative thinker and doer.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES (for non-exempt jobs, indicate approximate percentage of time spent on each responsibility):
- Oversight and primary project management of all assembly construction activities at the construction site.
- Work with all project documentation in partnership with project team, architects, engineers and on-site contractors
- Identify, mitigate, and track construction issues.
- Implement, monitor, and drive the project. Promptly partner with the management team of schedule and performance issues. Be proactive in anticipating potential problems that may impact the project performance.
- Work in collaboration with design and manufacturing engineers to report assembly findings and work on continuous improvement.
- Provide direction to general contractors, subcontractors, and vendors to ensure that quality standards are met
- Participate in project kickoff meetings, supporting the project manager on the handoff of technical information.
- Regularly communicate with engineers, architects, and others working on the project.
- Assist in interpreting design development, schematic and construction documents, including specifications and submittals.
- Set and maintain (or assist with) internal assembly building schedules.
- Interface with supply chain partners and project managers to answer production related questions and assist as needed to ensure meeting delivery schedules.
- Manage the Company Safety program as outlined in the Company Safety manual and provide safety and incident reporting as required.
- Ensure total subcontractor compliance with all jobsite safety guidelines, maintain a clean jobsite and communicate with appropriate members of the project team if there are repeat offenders.
EDUCATION, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- 5 plus years of demonstrable experience in the residential or commercial building industry.
- Bachelors degree in architecture, engineering, construction management, or relevant technical field or have equivalent work experience.
- Solid understanding and experience in design of PEMB and Steel structures
- Skilled at reading and understanding project drawings and specifications.
- Capable of navigating and commenting on project documents (PDF, .dwg, .xls) using viewer and commenting/collaboration software.
- Highly organized with excellent multi-tasking abilities and experience.
- Deep logical thinker with an eye for detail and design.
- Able to facilitate groups, manage external resources, and negotiate- getting groups to work together to meet the expectations.
- Use logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.
- Positive outlook with a forward-thinking perspective. “Never give up” mindset.
- Team oriented and highly adaptive to various skills and project types.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills – clearly able to relay technical concepts.
- Must be results-oriented, high energy individual contributor and team player with a high work ethic.
- Ability to travel to sites, client meetings, trainings or conferences as requested and required
Preferred but not required:
- Bilingual in Spanish.
- Professional certification, such as CCM (certified construction manager), AC (associate constructor), or CPC (certified professional constructor) preferred, but not required
WORK ENVIRONMENT/ PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Construction site, prolonged periods stand up and walking.
- At office, prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
- Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds at times.
- Candidate will have to spend a couple of months at the beginning of the project in Pittsburgh.
