Rate:$40 - $44/hour
The Sign Language/English Interpreter acts as a vital communicative liaison between the Deaf and non-deaf individuals in the Advocates community. The Interpreter’s primary role is to interpret spoken and written English to and from American Sign Language. The Interpreter reports to the Communication Access Director and will work throughout the agency and surrounding communities as needed.
Minimum Education Required:Bachelor's DegreeShift:First ShiftAdditional Shift Details:Tuesday – FridayResponsibilities:- Interpret American Sign Language (ASL) to and from spoken English for individuals and guests throughout the agency and the surrounding communities.
- Translate written English to and from ASL for individuals and guests throughout the agency.
- Adhere to the National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf Code of Ethics and Code of Professional Conduct
- Direct staff on the linguistic and cultural nuances of the Deaf and Non-Deaf community in relation to the design of and/or implementation of trainings, meetings, and projects.
- Work effectively with outside interpreters for trainings and meetings.
- Communicate regularly with the Communications Access Director and Assistant Director regarding quality assurance such as assignment logistics, scheduling, changes identified for individual assignments as the need arises.
- Mentor interpreting students from local educational institutions under the supervision of the Communication Access Assistant Director
- Ability to work remotely using a variety of platforms (Zoom, MS Teams, Web Ex Etc.)
- Ensure that individuals we support are treated with dignity and respect in accordance with Advocates’ Human Rights Policy.
- Adhere to all principles related to the Advocates Way.
- Perform all duties in accordance with the agency’s policies and procedures.
- Strictly follow all agency Performance Standards.
- B.A. or B.S. degree in related field, and five years interpreting experience with RID certification preferred.
- Current Certificate of Interpretation (CI) from the National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf and/or Current Certificate of Transliteration (CT) from the National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf and/or Current National Interpreter Certification (NIC) from the National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf preferred.
- Must have interpreting experience in a wide variety of settings, most particularly Mental Health and Corporate Environments preferred.

- Strongly prefer a candidate that will have a demonstrated understanding of and competence in serving culturally diverse populations.
- Must have knowledge and understanding of Deaf Culture.
- Must possess strong interpersonal skills.
- Basic computer knowledge required.
- Must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily.
- Ability to travel to multiple sites throughout Massachusetts for assignments.
- Ability to be flexible with schedule to meet needs of interpreting requests.
