SHIPPING CLERK JOB DESCRIPTION:
Shipping Clerks are responsible for keeping records of all products shipped. They pack the goods in shipping containers, develop mailing labels or bill of ladings, create shipping documents, and ensure that all orders have been filled correctly. A Shipping Clerk prepares items for shipment ensuring cost effective courier services. A shipping clerk typically works in a warehouse environment and is responsible for tracking inventory levels, handling all aspects of shipping and keeping accurate records. They safely package items, print labels, weigh packages and determine appropriate shipment method.
Overall Responsibilities:
- Prepares shipments for commercial conveyance; determines most economical and efficient shipping method; selects appropriate shipping container; packs items to ensure safe delivery
- Prepares bills of lading; checks items to be shipped against work orders to ascertain that quantities, destination, and routing are correct
- Process return shipments when needed
- Inspects shipments for damages or defects; records discrepancies or damages and notifies department supervisor and/or Production Manager
- Traces lost shipments and/or claims of lost shipments; initiates proof of delivery documents
- Maintains department database, prepares routine reports, and files shipping records
- Operates dollies, pallet jacks, and/or forklifts in loading and unloading supplies and equipment; may operate the shrink wrap machine; may operate company vehicles to deliver shipments; may assist in routine maintenance of equipment and shipping area; may lock warehouse and set alarms
- Follows established departmental policies, procedures, and objectives, continuous quality improvement objectives, and safety, environmental, and/or infection control standards
- Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned by department supervisor
- Work environment involves minimal exposure to physical risks, such as operating dangerous equipment or working with chemicals
- Work may involve moderate exposure to unusual elements, such as extreme temperatures, dirt, dust, fumes, smoke, unpleasant odors, and/or loud noises
- Organizes distribution and shipping of merchandise. Makes necessary verifications against documents, unpacks and routes goods to appropriate storage areas. Handles pick-ups.
- Maintains internal record-keeping systems
- Contacts resource people for various information as needed. Contacts transport companies and suppliers to expedite, trace, or return merchandise that does not conform to specifications or purchase orders.
- Assembles containers and crates, properly packages goods to be shipped and prepares identifying information and shipping instructions
- Knows safe storage and handling procedures for various chemicals and materials
- Knows proper shipping procedures for transportation of dangerous goods
- Maintains various storage areas, keeping areas always organized.
- Loads trucks efficiently and safely
- Uses proper packaging techniques and equipment to ensure products are delivered free of damage
- Unloads and packages racks of material as they arrive from finishing, cabinet makers, etc.
- Utilizes checklists and the QR Code Tracking system to load products onto trucks, ensuring all products are accounted for and scanned that they were placed onto delivery trucks
- Assists Receiving when needed for dock space or in the unloading of products
- Reports to department supervisor, as well as bring any issues or questions to the department supervisor's attention
- Uses proper fall protection when operation on the mezzanines
Required:
- Must be able to lift 50lbs
- Must be able to work overtime as needed.
- Must be able to work on day shift: (Monday-Friday)
- Basic computer skills (Microsoft Word, Excel, Email)
- Valid driver's license
Preferred:
- CDL (Not required)
