Description
The Altavista Biomass Power Station is a renewable energy facility located within the Lynchburg, Virginia metro region, in the foothills of the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains. The facility has a capacity of 51 MW and is equipped with two B&W boilers, a Mitsubishi steam turbine, and an Alstom generator working in synergy to generate electricity from biomass feedstocks. NAES has a long standing operating history with the regulated electric utility that owns the station. The plant’s electrical generation is included as a valuable resource in the utility’s long-range plans.
Opportunity Summary
As the Shift Supervisor, you will be responsible for overseeing remote operations and monitoring equipment from the control room, while also providing support to the Control Room Operator and stepping in as needed. Additionally, you will collaborate closely with the Operations & Maintenance Manager to ensure efficient equipment usage during downtime, and with the Compliance Coordinator to ensure adherence to relevant NERC standards and other regulatory requirements. Your role will also involve managing team coverage, coordinating training sessions, conducting plant walkthroughs for maintenance tasks, and ensuring compliance with environmental permits, regulations, and company policies, all while striving for continuous improvement in facility operation and maintenance.
Primary Responsibilities
- Responsible for supervising remote operations and monitoring equipment from the control room, assisting the Control Room Operator as needed, and filling in as required.
- Coordinates with the Operations & Maintenance (O&M) Manager to ensure reliable and efficient equipment usage during downtime.
- Collaborates with the Compliance Coordinator to ensure compliance with applicable requirements.
- Ensures that the shift adheres to all relevant NERC standards.
- Ensures adherence to facility operating procedures and equipment technical manuals to start, stop, adjust, or modify equipment operations within recommended parameters.
- Demonstrates proficiency in SAP, supporting the facility's maintenance philosophy.
- Visually inspects and listens to equipment to assess repair or adjustment needs.
- Ensures the safe operation of facility equipment and personnel safety.
- Guarantees compliance with environmental permits, regulations, laws, and company policies.
- Manages team coverage for vacations and absenteeism efficiently.
- Coordinates crew training for team effectiveness.
- Supervises all plant operations personnel directly.
- Assists the O&M Manager in departmental administration and management.
- Conducts plant walkthroughs per shift to identify and assign repair and cleaning tasks.
- Troubleshoots equipment failures during operation to aid maintenance technicians.
- Ensures clear and accurate maintenance work request submissions.
- Maintains proper documentation of plant activities through log sheets and other tracking methods, analyzing data for pending failures or deviations.
- Reviews completed chemistry logs for accuracy and corrective actions.
- Produces written reports including Daily Production Reports and Incident Reports.
- Plans, directs, and performs functional testing of plant systems and components.
- Identifies operational deficiencies and provides recommendations for improvement.
- Strives for continuous improvement in facility operation and maintenance.
- Approves and ensures timely submission of accurate timesheets.
- Proactively seeks responsibilities to support company needs.
- Participates in Root Cause Analysis (RCA) teams as necessary.

- Administers team member performance evaluations and sets goals.
- Conducts corrective employee behavioral actions when needed.
- Coordinates equipment outages for maintenance.
- Conducts shift communication update meetings as required.
- Carries out other duties directed by the O&M Manager.

Working Relationships
The Shift Supervisor works under the direction of the O&M Manager, and receives direction from the Plant Manager.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
Physical requirements include standing for extended periods, requiring stair and ladder climbing and routinely lifting up to 50 pounds. Protective equipment must be worn in the performance of some duties (e.g. hard hats, safety glasses, air masks, ear protection, chemical suits, hot gloves and high voltage protective equipment, etc.). Work with hazardous materials may be required.
Fitness for Duty
All employees will participate in the Fitness for Duty Program. This program includes a post-offer physical examination and drug screening and post-employment random drug screening.
Work Schedule
This position entails working 12-hour shifts, alternating between four day shifts and four days off, followed by four night shifts. Position requires extended working hours and varied shifts with weekend and holiday work, as required by schedules, work load and plant conditions. "On call" status will periodically be required.
Compensation
Initial starting compensation will range from $46 to $49 per hour.
Job Qualifications
- Ability to comprehend specific procedures and instructions pertinent to the assigned area, acquired through high school education.
- Proven leadership skills, adept at supervising teams, task coordination, guidance provision, and ensuring safety and operational standards compliance.
- Minimum of two years of control room experience in a power/process environment required.
- In-depth understanding of power plant operations, covering fuel processing, combustion, turbine operations, and boiler maintenance, crucial for plant efficiency.
- Proven hands-on experience with high-pressure turbines and wood or coal-fired boilers, including troubleshooting, ensuring effective performance.
- Demonstrated capability in making timely and effective decisions during emergencies, coupled with experience in drafting operating procedures and providing training.
- Comprehensive grasp of regulatory requirements such as NERC standards, environmental permits, and company policies, ensuring compliance and corrective actions.
- Proficiency in mathematics, mechanical, and electrical skills essential for managing production control processes and optimizing plant output.
- Strong analytical skills for identifying operational deficiencies, conducting root cause analysis, and proposing enhancements to facility performance and reliability.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills for conveying information clearly to team members, management, and stakeholders, ensuring understanding of plant status and compliance requirements.
- Efficient organizational capabilities for managing team coverage, training coordination, maintenance scheduling, and task prioritization to meet operational deadlines.
- Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license at all times.
