Job Description:
The Senior Tax Manager plays a key role in overseeing and managing the tax functions of an organization, ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal tax regulations while also developing and executing strategies to minimize the company's tax liabilities. This position involves a blend of technical expertise, leadership, and communication skills.
Key Responsibilities:
Tax Compliance and Reporting:
Oversee the preparation and filing of federal, state, and local tax returns for individuals, corporations, partnerships, and other entities.
Ensure timely and accurate compliance with all tax laws and regulations.
Review tax provisions and work with external auditors for financial statement audits and tax-related matters.
Monitor changes in tax laws and regulations, and ensure the organization stays in compliance with new requirements.
Tax Planning and Strategy:
Develop and implement tax strategies to optimize tax positions and reduce liabilities.
Collaborate with senior leadership to assess and manage the tax impact of business transactions such as mergers, acquisitions, and restructurings.
Provide tax planning and advisory services to the executive team and business units to support strategic initiatives.
Evaluate and recommend tax-efficient structures for business operations and transactions.
Research and Technical Support:
Conduct tax research to interpret tax laws and regulations and provide guidance on complex issues.
Advise on the tax implications of business decisions and assist in the resolution of any tax issues or disputes.
Prepare technical memoranda and other documentation supporting tax positions.
Team Leadership and Development:
Supervise and mentor junior tax staff, providing guidance on technical matters and professional development.
Review the work of team members, providing feedback and ensuring the quality and accuracy of tax filings.
Foster a collaborative and positive team environment while ensuring adherence to deadlines.
Audit and Risk Management:
Manage tax audits and liaise with government agencies on behalf of the company.
Identify and mitigate tax risks, providing recommendations for improvement in internal controls and processes.
Cross-Functional Collaboration:
Work closely with legal, finance, accounting, and other departments to ensure tax considerations are integrated into business decisions.
Support the treasury and finance teams on cash tax forecasting and tax provisioning.
Collaborate with external tax advisors, consultants, and legal teams when needed for specialized issues.
Budgeting and Forecasting:
Assist in the preparation of annual tax budgets and forecasts, including managing tax liabilities and ensuring proper planning for tax payments.
Monitor and track tax-related expenses and ensure adherence to budgetary constraints.
Qualifications:
Education:
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (required).
CPA, JD, or MST (Master of Science in Taxation) preferred.
Experience:
5+ years of experience in corporate tax, public accounting, or a related field, with at least 2+ years in a managerial or supervisory capacity.
Strong experience in federal, state, and local tax compliance and reporting.
Experience with tax planning, mergers, acquisitions, and business restructuring.
Technical Skills:
Expertise in U.S. tax law, including knowledge of corporate taxation, international tax, state and local taxes (SALT), and tax accounting.
Proficiency with tax preparation software (e.g., OneSource, Corptax, or similar).
Strong proficiency with Excel and other Microsoft Office tools.
