Job Summary:
Senior Tax Accountant – Indirect Tax is responsible for managing and ensuring compliance with various indirect tax requirements, including sales and use tax, property tax, CAT tax, B&O tax, and business licenses. This role involves preparing, reviewing, and reconciling tax filings, maintaining the tax engine, and supporting indirect tax audits. The Senior Tax Professional will also work closely with internal and external stakeholders to address tax-related inquiries and improve processes to ensure compliance with state and local regulations.
Key Responsibilities:
Indirect Tax Compliance:
- Prepare, review, and reconcile sales and use tax, CAT tax, and B&O tax filings to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.
- Manage tax payment schedules, ensuring all returns and payments are submitted accurately and on time.
- Review tax filings prepared by third-party providers, ensuring alignment with internal records.
- Monitor tax regulations and ensure timely implementation of changes in the company’s tax processes and filings.
Tax Reporting and Reconciliation:
- Reconcile transactional tax reports with the General Ledger (GL) and resolve discrepancies.
- Analyze and validate tax data for accuracy and consistency across various systems.
Tax Engine Maintenance:
- Maintain and update the tax engine software, ensuring accurate tax rate, product & customer taxability.
- Troubleshoot and resolve tax engine issues in collaboration with IT.
Audit Support:
- Lead and support indirect tax audits by preparing and providing data, addressing auditor inquiries, and resolving findings.
- Maintain organized records and documentation to support audit processes.
Property Tax and Business Licenses:
- Compile and provide facility, asset, and inventory information to third-party providers for property tax filings.
- Manage business license renewals and support the filing of annual reports in coordination with internal teams.
Advisory and Process Improvement:
- Provide guidance to internal stakeholders on tax-related questions and ensure understanding of tax implications for business operations.
- Identify opportunities to improve indirect tax compliance processes and implement best practices.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- CPA certification is preferred but not required.
- 3-5 years of experience in indirect tax, with a focus on compliance, reporting, and audits.
- Strong understanding of sales and use tax, property tax, and other indirect tax concepts.
- Proficiency with Vertex tax engine software and ERP systems – Business Central, Infor & AS400 preferred
- Advanced knowledge of accounting principles and practices.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with exceptional attention to detail.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
Preferred Skills:
- Experience working with third-party tax service providers.
- Familiarity with state and local tax laws and regulations.
- Proficiency in Excel, including advanced functions (e.g., VLOOKUP, PivotTables).
