About the Job
The Senior Systems Administrator is part of the GYN-COE team to design, maintain and monitor Windows based systems and Linux based application and desktop virtualization services supporting research and administrative activities under the direction of the Program Manager who establishes and provides general guidelines and overall priorities. The Systems Engineer works independently; establishes internal priorities, work schedules and goals and uses their own initiative and sound judgment. Work is evaluated based on results achieved towards established goals and requirements, timeliness, application of sound business practice and efficient use of resources.
This position will be on-site in support of the Gynecologic Cancer- Center of Excellence (GYN-COE) in Annandale, VA.
Responsibilities
- Perform daily system monitoring, verifying the integrity and availability of all hardware, server resources, systems and key processes, reviewing system and application logs, and verifying completion of scheduled jobs such as backups.
- Perform regular security monitoring to identify any possible intrusions.
- Perform daily backup operations, ensuring all required file systems and system data are successfully backed up to the appropriate media, recovery tapes or disks are created, and media is recycled and sent off site as necessary.
- Perform regular file archival and purge as necessary.
- Create, change, and delete user accounts per request.
- Provide Tier 1- III/other support per request from various constituencies. Investigate and troubleshoot issues.
- Repair and recover from hardware or software failures. Coordinate and communicate with impacted constituencies.
- Research and Implement new systems as necessary
- Manage and maintain hardware and server inventory
- Create and maintain IT documentation including Policies, procedures, SOPs etc.
- Apply OS patches and upgrades on a regular basis, and upgrade administrative tools and utilities. Configure / add new services as necessary.
- Maintain operational, configuration, or other procedures.
- Perform periodic performance reporting to support capacity planning.
- Perform ongoing performance tuning, hardware upgrades, and resource optimization as required. Configure CPU, memory, and disk partitions as required.
- Manages the Information Technology hardware to ensure that performance meets necessary requirements.
- Monitors information management systems and establishes standard operating procedures for quality control, security and ethical practice.

- This position will take place primarily in a office setting. On-site in Annandale, VA.
Education and Experience
- Associate's Degree; Bachelor's Degree preferred
- Minimum of 9-10 years experience required
OR
- Experience can be substituted for the education above: 10 or more years of related experience.
Licenses and Certifications
- Vendor training/certification preferred (e.g. Cisco CCIE) but not required.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Advanced skills with system device management and monitoring.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills to work with a wide variety of personnel of varied technical knowledge.
