Job Title: Senior Substation Engineer
Job Location: 1301 Solana Blvd Bldg 2 STE 2500, Westlake, TX 76262
Primary Function:
As the leader of a project team, the Senior Substation Engineer performs engineering and design duties as well as organizes all activities required for the development and implementation of high voltage electrical substation projects across a multidisciplinary team of drafters, designers, and various levels of engineers. The Senior Substation Engineer drives project schedules and budgets for multiple projects at a time and functions as a Company contact for clients and vendors.
Duties & Responsibilities
Employee may be called upon to perform any or all of the following functions:
- Ensure that projects are managed to meet project quality, schedule and profitability objective
- Supervise and coordinate all project activities to ensure on time completion.
- Assign tasks to project design team based on project needs
- Work with project team to create or modify all design documents
- Ensure project team is using project specific standards and that the design effort is progressing in the most efficient manner possible
- Develop one line diagrams, electrical plans, and specifications for a project
- Apply engineering application software to complete tasks such as ground grid design, relay coordination, transformer sizing, load flow, and short circuit studies
- Perform engineering and design functions as necessary to meet project schedules
- Communicate and coordinate project activities with customer representatives, project team, and management
- Prepare, coordinate, and track project schedules and budgets, and ensure projects remain within allotted budgets and schedules and address deviations with management
- Ensure project team applies engineering standards including NEC, NESC, NEMA, IEEE and ANSI
- Properly use the document management system
- Take personal responsibility for the quality and accuracy of his/her work
- Bring potential project-related problems and possible solutions to the attention of the responsible party
- Travel out of town for short periods of time as required by projects and assignments
- Other duties as required
Minimum Qualifications / Experience
Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from an accredited university is required, a power focus is preferred. Must be a licensed professional engineer; if registered in a state other than where the engineer will practice, the employee must be able to obtain a license within eighteen months of date of hire. A minimum of ten years of direct experience and proven knowledge in high voltage (138kV and above) electrical substation engineering and design field is required.
Possess skills in the following areas:
- Strong knowledge and understanding of high voltage electrical substation components and their functions at 138kV and above
- Extensive knowledge of AC/DC fundamentals
- Strong knowledge and understanding of three phase power systems, per-unit mathematics, and symmetrical components
- Knowledge of common engineering application software
- Strong Knowledge and understanding of engineering standards including NEC, NESC, NEMA, IEEE and ANSI
- Strong knowledge of design documents and drawings necessary to complete a project
- Supervising a project team in a technical work environment
- Knowledge of common word processing, spreadsheet, and e-mail software
- Working in a team environment
- Communicating effectively with co-workers, vendors, clients, etc.
Physical Requirements:
- This position requires minimal physical effort.
- Must be able to endure prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer for a minimum of 8 hours a day
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee will primarily work indoors, with occasional outdoor exposure to year around weather conditions and noise.
- Must be able and willing to travel overnight for trainings and/or meetings as required (10%)
- Working extended hours, including weekends, may be required periodically.
- May occasionally lift up to 25 pounds at a time.
