Senior Research Assistant -OR- Research Associate - Oregon Health & Science University
Portland, OR
About the Job
Department Overview
Sarah Andres' Lab is located within the Department of Pediatrics. The Andres Lab investigates intestinal barrier function with a focus on the neonatal inflammatory disease necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) and the use of human milk extracellular vesicles as a potential therapeutic. By using rare human patient samples, genetic mouse models, and cutting-edge patient-derived organoids, the Andres Lab is at the forefront of research in these fields evidenced by high impact publications and multiple funding sources.
Function/Duties of Position
We are looking to fill the role of Senior Research Assistant -OR- Research Associate.
The role has two components. These include lab organization and Research Assistant responsibilities.
Lab organizational duties of the Andres Lab. The prime objective is to coordinate the day-to-day operations of the lab while ensuring research expectations set by the Principal Investigator (PI), collaborators, and sources of funding are met. The researcher must secure compliance of regulatory requirements for the lab and its members including those required to work with hazardous materials, rodent models, and human samples. The researcher stocks the lab with all the resources and equipment necessary to maintain workflow. The researcher also works with the PI to design, implement, and evaluate various research projects. They oversee the training and supervision of Research Assistants or summer students. The researcher is also responsible for maintaining The Andres Lab website.
In addition to organizational duties, the individual also has Research Assistant responsibilities. The researcher is responsible for executing experiments for both focus areas of the Andres Lab.
The first focus area is the Andres Lab’s NEC animal model and all related experiments. This involves independent management of multiple co-ocurring experiments involving neonatal mouse pups, genetic rodent colony management, oral gavage, and use of a hypoxic chamber. This also includes intestinal tissue harvest and procesing, enteroid generation and propogation, immune cell isolation and culture, immunostaining and microscopy, molecular biology, such as PCR, qRT-PCR, and western blotting.
The second research focus of Andres Lab is human milk extracellular vesicles. The tasks for this focus area involve isolating extracellular vesicles via density-gradient ultracentrifugation, quantifying by Nanoparticle Tracking analysis, and running various downstream analyses or experiments including, imaging and cell uptake studies, microRNA sequencing, proteomics, and oral gavage into rodant models.
