Mahoney Environmental, a 70 year-old successful, service business, is a national leader in the collection and recycling of restaurant cooking waste materials. Our customers range from independent restaurants to national chains and food processing facilities.
The Senior Paralegal role encompasses a broad spectrum of responsibilities that support the efficiency and effectiveness of legal services provided. This position involves a deeper level of engagement with case and contract management, research, internal communications, document preparation, ensuring that the Legal Counsel & Corporate Secretary has all the necessary tools and information to represent Mahoney Environmental successfully. With a blend of experience and advanced knowledge in varied legal subjects and documentation, the Senior Paralegal serves as a cornerstone for the legal team, facilitating smoother workflows and enhancing the quality of legal service delivery in-house.
Education: An associate or bachelor’s degree, often in paralegal studies, legal studies, or a related field. Coursework in contracts and ethics helpful. Advanced degrees or specializations in areas like corporate law or litigation enhance prospects.
Experience: 3-5 years of hands-on experience in a corporate setting. Skilled in research, document preparation, case and contract management, and contract review. Experience with corporate law and civil or criminal litigation is preferred. Continuous learning through practical exposure, and participation in advanced legal tasks, emphasizing the importance of a diverse and comprehensive legal background.
Certifications & Licenses: Certified Paralegal (CP) from the National Association of Legal Assistants (NALA) or the Paralegal Advanced Competency Exam (PACE) offered by the National Federation of Paralegal Associations (NFPA) welcomed, but not required.
This is a Hybrid role working three days in the office and 2 days from home.

Duties/Responsibilities:
- Perform diverse tasks touching all aspects of the business, including compliance, sustainability, security and theft prevention, and frequent interaction with the organization’s leadership team.
- Support a wide range of business transactions including customer sales, vendor review and onboarding, property leases, and mergers and acquisitions.
- Assist in reviewing and negotiating customer and vendor contracts for sales, fleet, operations, safety, human resources, and finance functions.
- Conduct investigations gathering facts and compiling documents to respond to citations and notices of violations for operational and DOT compliance, subpoenas, security matters, and internal audits.
- Manage outside counsel’s handling of disputes and civil litigation, assist with discovery and subpoenas, coordinating evidence collection, and organizing corporate witnesses’ depositions.
- Review and/or draft legal documents, including demand letters, pleadings, discovery, mediation briefs, municipal and regulatory agency notices, corporate meeting minutes, and correspondence, ensuring accuracy and compliance.
- Liaise with clients, vendors, court clerks, and employees and affiliates throughout the organization to gather information, provide updates on various projects’ progress, perform due diligence, and offer general support throughout the legal process.
- Perform research, utilizing open-source databases and other resources to gather information.
- Coordinate with employees, insurance adjusters, law firms, government agencies, and global company affiliates, to facilitate information exchange and meet project requirements.
- Manage the filing of legal documents with courts and government agencies, ensuring adherence to deadlines and procedural requirements.
- Handle special projects as assigned, including preparing PowerPoint presentations for executive leadership and steering committee reviews, developing internal training sessions, and other specific legal support needs for the organization.
