Skills and attributes for success:
- Performs the following tasks while complying with established procedures: compiles, prepares, and summarizes relevant materials for use by attorneys in discovery and in preparation of motions, briefs and other legal documents.
-Summarizes depositions and other transcripts.
- Maintains case files.
- Performs simple legal research.
- Indexes, tracks and controls document discovery (including documents produced and received in discovery)
- Indexes, tracks and exhibits and other materials at depositions and at trial
- Prepares exhibit cross-references.
- Assists attorneys in courtroom.
- Reviews documents for relevance and privilege according to established guidelines and criteria.
- Other examples of the types of work to be performed include compilation of documents for FOIA, production requests, Congressional inquiries, etc.
- Works with client attorneys, federal law enforcement officers, and support staff to prepare cases for litigation.
- Organizes subpoena responses, coordinates its distribution with the investigation team and maintains subpoena logs up to date.
- Obtains records, documents, and evidence from federal law enforcement agencies and via the legal process.
- Examines, prepares and processes a variety of legal documents which are characteristically voluminous and complex in nature.
- Maintains, manages, and organizes case material utilizing software, including databases, spreadsheets and word processing applications.
- Notes deficiencies in the uploading of case materials and missing materials, and undertakes inquiries to correct deficiencies.
- Works with litigation support to resolve any issues related to the intake, processing, and dissemination of discovery.
- Assists client attorneys in producing discovery to defense counsel: Gathers, redacts and bates stamps discovery materials in order to produce to defense counsel. Produces discovery to defense counsel via electronic or hard copy methods in a timely manner. Ensures defense counsel is able to access and download the material and troubleshoots any issues in doing so.
- Organizes and coordinates discovery distribution, including indexes and production logs.
- Suggests and develops effective trial presentation of case materials.
- Prepares computerized trial presentation programs and demonstrative exhibits.
- Operates electronic systems and court presentation software during court proceedings.
- Provides one-on-one assistance with eDiscovery and Litigation Technology tools.
- Provides assistance to case attorneys in trial preparation.
Qualifications:
- Requires paralegal certificate, or JD, or currently attending an ABA-accredited law school, having completed at least one year of study.
- Only the Contracting Officer can approve a waiver of the education requirements.
- At least two years of litigation paralegal experience required; trial experience very helpful.
- At least one year of experience in automated litigation support.
- Requires sound working knowledge of federal and state court system, legal research procedures, and legal research resources.
- Requires excellent written and oral communication skills and thorough knowledge of legal research tools such as LEXIS and Westlaw.
- Must have hands-on familiarity with a variety of computer applications, including word processing, databases (such as document review and file management systems), spreadsheets, imaging, and hardware systems.
- Role also requires hands-on familiarity with ESI tools and knowledge of eDiscovery procedures and resources.
- Ability to consistently deliver highest quality work under extreme pressure will be very important.
