Freeman Price are seeking a talented Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to join our clients San Francisco Bay Area R&D team. This role focuses on advanced mechanical design. This is a hybrid position requiring on-site presence at least three days per week.
About the Role
- As a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer, you will lead the planning, design, and execution of mechanical systems for regulated, high-quality, high-demand products. Your work will ensure these products are safe, functional, and commercially successful.
Responsibilities
- Develop conceptual designs for technology development projects.
- Collaborate with scientists and engineers to design, develop, and test experimental hardware.
- Draft and interpret technical requirements and specifications.
- Create optimized designs meeting cost, functionality, and specification standards.
- Lead and support industrial design efforts.
- Use SolidWorks 3D CAD to model components and assemblies.
- Conduct design-for-excellence analyses.
- Specify and execute verification and validation testing for design solutions.
- Build, test, and evaluate prototypes, including environmental testing (e.g., temperature, shock, vibration, ingress).
- Document product designs to support cost-effective manufacturing processes.
- Generate detailed engineering drawings and test specifications.
- Provide lifecycle support for product designs, ensuring continuous improvements.
- Collaborate within multi-disciplinary project teams.
- Contribute to the development of the Mechanical Engineering Department by mentoring junior engineers and refining processes.
Qualifications
- Education: Degree in Mechanical Engineering or Associates equivalent; professional accreditation is a plus.
- Experience: Minimum 5 years of design engineering experience, including electronic and scientific component packaging for harsh environments.
- Technical Skills:
- Proficiency in 3D CAD tools and product data management (SolidWorks preferred).
- Experience with manufacturing methods such as plastic injection molding, additive manufacturing, sheet metal design, and conventional machining.
- Familiarity with thermal and fluid flow analysis, COMSOL Multiphysics, MATLAB, and LabView.
- Knowledge of military standards is beneficial but not mandatory.
- Process Knowledge: Familiarity with the gated engineering design process, including concept design, prototyping, testing, and production.
- Business Tools: Experience with ERP systems is a plus.
Pay range and compensation package
- $125,000-$165,000
