Job Summary
The Senior Manager – Locomotive Reliability is responsible for monitoring and creating overall locomotive fleet strategy for numerous locomotives based on data analysis and performance. The incumbent designs planned maintenance actions to address issues during unscheduled and scheduled events. The incumbent leads the management team overseeing fleet health including systems and components. The position collaborates with the Maintenance Program team, Planning team, Vendor Management, Shop Operations, Procurement and Supply Management (P&SM) and Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) to improve fleet performance.
Main Responsibilities
Fleet Management and Management of Assigned Staff
· Supervise the re-engineering of locomotive mechanical and electrical performance for a fleet of locomotives through a fleet strategy based on data analysis and Lean Six Sigma methodologies to reduce unscheduled stops and train delays
· Oversee identification of mechanical locomotive failures to increase reliability and inefficiencies in the processes for their repair and maintenance
· Perform cost analysis to maintain all corrective actions within the operational budget
· Control equipment review to identify better methodologies that improve maintenance and cycle
· Manage statistical analysis including tools utilized to analyze data from SAP database to identify opportunities for process improvements
· Assist shop leadership team in implementing and sustaining improvement initiatives
· Develop and oversee staff’s weekly and monthly creation of performance summaries
· Advance strategic plans to assist shop leadership in optimizing shop assets including work scopes
· Own and drive reconciliation of reliability guaranties with the Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM’s)
· Work closely with Locomotive Engineering, Locomotive Onboard Systems (LOBS), Operating Technologies (OT) and I&T to ensure internal requirements and specs are maintained
Continuous Fleet Performance Improvement
· Lead Reliability Control Committee (RCC) for the CN fleet and present action plans to Executives including the Chief Operating Officer (COO), Regional Vice-Presidents (VPs), Chief Mechanical Officer (CMO), Assistant Chief Mechanical Officers (ACMOs) as well as Mechanical leaders on a monthly basis
· Ensure Return on Investments (ROI) for all proposed projects are included during RCB and present to executives in Finance
· Build business plans and drive them through Authorized for Expenditure (AFE) process
· Ensure work scopes are created to be executed as part of CN’s capital plan in conjunction with OEMs and suppliers to identify the best solution to improve locomotive health
· Collaborate with Planning Department to prioritize fleet improvement projects and monitor execution with shops
· Develop communication rhythm with OEMs, PSM, and vendors
· Plan long-term capital expenses (CAPEX) and operating expenses (OPEX) for the locomotive fleet including work scopes to improve and revitalize locomotive reliability as well as safety
· Organize long-term planning to ensure equipment strategy matches with corporate goals
· Ensure fleet managers develop proper work scopes and align with OEM specs for CAPEX and OPEX events
· Assist PSM with OEM technical discussions to ensure that the scope of work (SOWs) is accomplished in a timely manner
· Understand locomotive repair process and failure modes
Administrative
· Develop documentation of critical problem statements for VPs
· Communicate findings to team and upper management levels
· Assist CMO, Sr. Director and VP in monitoring quality and failure initiatives
Working Conditions
The role has standard working conditions in an office environment with a regular workweek from Monday to Friday. Due to the nature of the role, the incumbent must be able to meet tight deadlines, handle pressure and stress. The incumbent requires occasional travel (25%) across the CN network in both Canada and the US.
Requirements
Experience
· Minimum 5 years of related industry experience
o 3 years middle management experience
o Minimum 2 years experience with locomotive OEM equipment
Education/Certification/Designation
· Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Design Engineering or any other Engineering
· Lean Six Sigma Black Belt*
*Any education for these above would be considered as an asset
