Position Overview
AE Works is seeking a highly skilled Senior Low Voltage Designer with experience designing cabling infrastructure for higher education, healthcare, and government facilities. In this role, you will lead design efforts on multiple projects, producing detailed construction documents for communication systems and electronic safety and security systems, while collaborating with diverse teams of clients, architects, and contractors.
You will be responsible for conducting site assessments, developing implementation strategies, and ensuring technical compliance throughout the project lifecycle. Location: Arlington, VA with travel to client and project sites.
Responsibilities
- Low-Voltage Design: Lead the design and construction administration of low-voltage systems, including Division 27 Communications and Division 28 Electronic Safety & Security. Deliverables include developing basis of design (BOD) narratives, floor plans with outlet locations, telecommunication room layouts, equipment rack elevations, backbone line/riser diagrams, and written specifications. Ensure designs comply with relevant codes and standards while maintaining cost-effectiveness and efficiency throughout project phases.
- Subject Matter Expertise: Demonstrate deep knowledge of low-voltage systems design, including telecommunication and electronic safety systems. Apply expertise in industry standards, emerging technologies, and system integration to manage complex projects, optimize performance, and drive innovation within the team.
- Client Collaboration: Collaborate with clients to assess their needs and document goals, system deficiencies, and requirements. Develop tailored solutions and implementation strategies to meet project objectives. Engage in on-site interactions, assessments, and presentations as needed to ensure alignment with client expectations.
- Technical Documentation: Lead the development of comprehensive technical documentation, including construction documents, system specifications, narratives, and reports. Prepare rough order of magnitude (ROM) construction estimates and integrate them into project planning processes.
- Quality Assurance: Perform detailed reviews of contractor bid documents, product submittals, and as-built record documents. Respond to requests for information (RFIs) and ensure all systems meet client requirements, operate efficiently, and comply with regulatory standards.
- Continuous Improvement: Stay informed about the latest advancements in low-voltage design, communications, and safety technologies. Propose innovative solutions to enhance system performance and reliability. Mentor team members, champion design standards, and foster professional growth within the engineering team.
- Team Collaboration: Work closely with multidisciplinary teams, including engineers, architects, and project managers, to ensure cohesive project delivery. Actively participate in project coordination activities, schedule management, and design reviews.
- Opportunity Development & Client Engagement: Participate in interviews and presentations to support new business opportunities.
Qualifications
- Experience: 7+ years of related low voltage design experience for building projects
- Education: [CK1] Associate’s degree in Electronics Technology, Telecommunications, or Related Field. An associate’s degree can be acceptable if supplemented with significant hands-on experience in low-voltage systems design and implementation.
- Certification: An active Registered Communications Distribution Designer (RCDD) certification is required
- Technical Skills: Skilled with using cloud based and mobile technology for collaboration. Proficiency in Revit and other relevant design software. Proficient computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite, Revit/CAD, and Bluebeam applications. Extensive knowledge of industry codes, standards, and best practices. Also, common infrastructure subsystems including pathways, telecommunications grounding/bonding, power, equipment racks/cabinets, outside cable plant, and horizontal/backbone cabling distribution. Technical expertise in commercial antennae television (CATV), audio visual/video teleconferencing (AV/VTC), local/wide area networks (LAN/WAN), Wi-Fi, distributed audio/overhead paging, distributed antennae systems (DAS), electronic safety & security (ESS).
