About the Job
T he Riverside County District Attorney's Office is seeking to fill Senior Legal Support Assistant positions for the Division of Victim Services. The Senior Legal Support Assistant position provides lead capacity to legal clerical unit staff Countywide.
The Senior Legal Support Assistant will work with witnesses and victims of crime, both directly and indirectly. Additionally, the incumbent will perform a wide variety of specialized clerical work involving the continual use of legal terminology and procedures; assist in processing and tracking a wide variety of legal documents, records and correspondence; perform difficult specialized legal clerical work in support of Division of Victim Services staff within County offices; perform other related duties as required.
The ideal candidate will be able to: explain to concerned parties the basic procedures of the judicial process as they relate to a variety of legal documents; understand the principals; provide trauma informed practices.
Competitive candidates will possess prior experience working with witnesses and victims of crime, and possess general knowledge of Marsy's Law Rights. Candidates with experience working in a law enforcement agency, legal environment, or a non-profit agency working with victims of crime are highly desired.
The Senior Legal Support Assistant is the advanced journey level classification in the Legal Support Assistant series. Assignments frequently require the exercise of independent judgment and are accomplished without immediate supervision. The Senior Legal Support Assistant is distinguished from the Legal Support Assistant II by the former's responsibility for assigning and reviewing of work performed by a legal clerical unit and serves in a lead capacity.

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL DUTIES
• Serve as secretarial and clerical support to the Division of Victim Services; schedule and coordinate appointments, screen callers and initiate reply to routine correspondence.
• Provide support to and be comfortable working with victims and witnesses in crisis.
• Provide technical assistance and guidance to clerical staff in resolving unusual problems; monitor work progress and adjust work assignments to ensure deadlines are met.
• Develop and document work procedures to streamline workflow.
• Prepare agendas and summaries of meetings.
• Prepare and process materials involving the use of complex source material and a thorough familiarity with the policies, procedures, legal terminology, and various applicable laws in order to obtain the necessary data.
• Compile a variety of narrative and statistical reports.
• Collect and organize resource material involving complex or specialized legal considerations; assign work and assure quality of work product within the legal office; participate in the evaluation of clerical staff members.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
OPTION I
Education:Graduation from high school or equivalent (e.g., GED, high school proficiency certificate).
Experience: Three years of clerical experience including two years in preparing and processing a variety of legal documents in a legal environment. (Completion of 18 semester or 27 quarter units from an accredited college or university in secretarial sciences, business education or a closely related field may substitute for one year of the required general clerical experience.
OPTION II
Education: Graduation from high school or equivalent (e.g., GED, high school proficiency certificate).
Experience:Three years of clerical experience including two years in preparing and processing a variety of legal documents in a legal environment. (Completion of 360 hours of training from a recognized occupational training program in secretarial sciences, business education or a closely related field may substitute for one year of the required general clerical experience.)
OPTION III
Education: Graduation from high school or equivalent (e.g., GED, high school proficiency certificate).
Experience: One year as a Legal Support Assistant II with the County of Riverside.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS
• S kill to type 40 words per minute. Candidates may be required to take a typing test prior to being considered for any Senior Legal Support Assistant position.
• Possession of a valid California Driver's License is required.
ALL OPTIONS
Knowledge of: Legal terminology and the full range of standard legal documentation appropriate to the area of law supported by the position; legal procedures and practices involved in composing, processing and filing legal documents and reports; standard legal references and their content; business English; proper formats for preparing correspondence, reports and a wide variety of legal documents.
Ability to: Exercise good judgment and initiative in the performance of legal clerical work; independently carry out a variety of clerical activities related to assignments; explain to concerned parties the basic procedures of the judicial process as they relate to a variety of legal documents; spell correctly, construct grammatical sentences and make mathematical computations.

MISCELLANEOUS RETIREMENT: County of Riverside has three retirement Tiers through the California Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS).
- Tier I (Classic Member - Formula 3% @ 60): Applicable to current and former County of Riverside local miscellaneous employees hired prior to 08/24/2012 and did not withdraw CalPERS contributions. The employee contribution is eight (8%) percent.
- Tier II (Classic Member - Formula 2% @ 60): Applicable to local miscellaneous employees 1) hired after 08/23/2012 through 12/31/2012; 2) Previously employed with another CalPERS contracting public agency or a reciprocal retirement system, with a break in service of less than six months between the separation date with the previous employer and the appointment date with the County of Riverside. The employee contribution is seven (7%) percent.
- Tier III (PEPRA New Member - Formula 2% @ 62): Applicable to CalPERS local miscellaneous new members hired on or after the implementation of the Public Employees' Pension Reform Act of 2013 (PEPRA) which took effect January 1, 2013. As of July 1, 2020, the employee contribution is 7.25% and subject to change annually.
A new member is defined as any of the following:
CalPERS refers to all members that do not fit within the definition of a new member as "classic members".
Contribution rates are subject to change based on the County of Riverside annual actuarial valuation.

DEFERRED COMPENSATION: Voluntary employee contribution with a choice between two 457 deferred compensation plan options.
VACATION ACCRUAL (Bi-Weekly Accrual):
0< 3 year = 80 Hours (10 Days)
4< 9 years = 120 Hours (15 Days)
10 or more years = 160 Hours (20 Days)
Maximum Vacation leave accumulation is 480 hours.
SICK LEAVE: Four (4) hours Sick Leave accrual per pay period with unlimited accrual.
HOLIDAYS: Normally 12 paid holidays per year
BEREAVEMENT LEAVE: Allowed 5 days (3 days are County paid; 2 additional days can be taken from accrued Sick Leave balance)
BASIC LIFE INSURANCE: Equal to one times annual base salary not to exceed $50,000 of term life coverage. Premiums are paid by the County. Additional Supplemental Life plan is available for employee purchase.
DISABILITY: Short-term Disability benefit pays up to a maximum of $461.54 weekly, payable up to a maximum of 52 weeks.
POST RETIREMENT MEDICAL CONTRIBUTION: A monthly contribution is made by the County towards retiree health insurance offered through the County as governed by the applicable Memorandum of Understanding.
