Position Summary:
The Senior Lab Technician will produce viral vectors using cell culture methods for use bymembers of the laboratory and research collaborators. The technician will alsoassist staff and students in the completion of experimental protocols such astissue processing, histological and immuno-histological staining, PCR, Westernblotting and microscopic analysis. The lab technician will also help conductbehavioral experiments in mice to study the role of specific genes in alcoholdrinking.
Other jobs include, but are not limited to:ordering supplies, inventory and maintenance of laboratory supplies, routinemaintenance of laboratory equipment, monitoring and disposal of biohazardousmaterials and chemical hazards, and organization of the laboratory environment.Experienced technicians will assist in training students in techniques employedby the laboratory.
Core Responsibilities:
- Produce viral vectors for use by the laboratory and researchcollaborators
- Perform tissue processing, immunohistochemistry, microscopy, real-timePCR, and Western blots. Assist staff with alcohol drinking and other relatedbehavioral experiments in mice
- General lab management: bookkeeping for all lab materials includingchemical and animal inventories; place order for supplies for all labpersonnel; responsible for IACUC and chemical inspections; attending DAR andchemical training and meetings; routine maintenance of lab equipment
Required Hiring Standards:
- Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Neuroscience or related field is required
- Experience in biology research lab and/or working with lab animals ispreferred
- Must have a demonstrated commitment to fostering diversity and inclusion in past experiences or a commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU
Preferred Hiring Standards:
- Background in Biology or Neuroscience is preferred
- Knowledge of safe laboratory practices is required for all job duties
