The University of North Texas Facilities Utilities Maintenance area is a critical component for the daily operation of the University. We are a 24/7 department, responsible for the efficient operation and management of all campus electricity, heating, cooling, plumbing, and mechanical maintenance. Our goal is to provide reliable, timely service for our staff, students, and faculty to focus on world-class education. We serve over 5 million square feet in all education and general buildings. This includes three substations, two main chiller plants, three satellite plants, various boilers, air handlers, and transformers. UNT is a small city inside the city of Denton Texas. Our team interfaces with the city to supply reliable and timely maintenance, so we continue to provide a world-class environment for research and education.
Position Overview
* This position is responsible for performing maintenance and repairs on all equipment associated with the production and distribution of chilled water to buildings on the UNT Denton campus.
* This position also performs all other duties assigned, including decorative fountain repairs, building automation troubleshooting, and troubleshooting and/or repair of chilled water end-use devices (AHUs).
* This position is also responsible for maintenance on DX units, walk-in coolers, and any related control devices.
* The goal of this position is to provide livable/workable interior space for students, faculty, staff, and research.
* Troubleshoots, maintains, repairs, and upgrades all equipment associated with HVAC for building on the UNT Denton Campuses.
* Systems include but are not limited to chillers, pumps, cooling towers, DX systems, and a campus-wide chilled water distribution loop.
* Inspects HVAC systems and their components (heating units, building exhaust fans, ventilation units, etc.) to evaluate, condition, and identify necessary repairs and recommend preventive maintenance.
* Prepares written materials (repair status, activity logs, etc.) to document activities and/or convey information.
* Recovers and recycles the refrigerants used in air conditioning and refrigeration systems as per EPA regulations.
* Installs, maintains, repairs, and rectifies problems through the many mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems including electrical motors, compressors, pumps, fans, ducts, pipes, thermostats, and switches which comprise heating, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems as per EPA regulations.
* Keeps records of all refrigerants purchased and used as per EPA regulations.
Minimum Qualifications
Five years' of experience in maintenance/repair or related field; or any equivalent combination of training and experience.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
* Knowledge of and skill in the use of standard tools, equipment, materials, methods, and practices of general maintenance tasks.
* Knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions of general maintenance.
* Knowledge of blueprints, schematics, and working drawings.
* Ability to use basic shop math applications.
* Ability to locate and identify problems in appropriate building systems or equipment and to plan and execute necessary repairs.
* Physical ability to perform moderately heavy physical work which includes lifting and crawling, and to remain outdoors in inclement weather.
* Knowledge of appropriate safety and security precautions appropriate to work performed.
Preferred Qualifications
Five years' of experience in maintenance/repair or related field; or any equivalent combination of training and experience.
Required License/Registration/Certifications
Possession of a valid Texas driver’s license or ability to obtain within 30 days of employment; ability to drive a vehicle and maintain coverage under University liability insurance policy, if required to drive University vehicles.
Section 608 Refrigeration Technician Certification.
Job Duties:
- Performs preventive maintenance on campus mechanical equipment including, but not limited to; air handlers, chillers, cooling towers, DX systems and pumps. Provides assistance and instruction to junior team members.
- Maintains tools in good working order. Makes tool and material requests to supervisor, or senior team member. Maintains cleanliness of shop, mechanical spaces on campus, and university vehicles. Picks up trash on campus when it is encountered.
- Performs repairs on campus mechanical equipment including HVAC and other mechanical systems. Provides assistance and instruction to junior team members.
- Makes suggestions on new equipment and equipment operation. Works with campus EMS and monitors BMS as assigned.
- Communicates with the requestors of work orders assigned. Attends position specific training as available. Performs all other duties assigned by Facilities Maintenance supervisor, manager, or director.
- Consistently completes expected duties in a timely manner without constant supervision. Accepts responsibility for own work and follows through on commitments.
