Job Description Summary

The Wharton School seeks a dynamic and visionary Senior Executive Director of Development to lead its ambitious fundraising efforts. Reporting to the Chief Advancement Officer (CAO), this senior leadership role is critical to achieving the School's mission of advancing business education and research through transformative philanthropy.

About the Role


The Senior Executive Director of Development will be responsible for:



+ Strategic Fundraising Leadership: Designing and executing a comprehensive fundraising strategy with restricted and unrestricted support.


+ Team Leadership: Managing and inspiring program directors and their teams to meet and exceed fundraising goals.


+ Prospect Management: Providing a vision for annual, major, and corporate/foundation gift fundraising strategies, including close collaboration with the Sr. Managing Director, Principal Gifts, and Board Relations.


+ Program Oversight: Overseeing The Wharton Fund, domestic and international major gifts, Corporate and Foundation Relations (CFR), and Strategic Initiatives while serving as a key liaison to the central Office of Gift Planning.


+ Donor Engagement: Managing a portfolio of major and principal gift donors and prospects to build meaningful relationships and maximize their philanthropic impact.


+ Cultural Leadership: Promoting a culture of collaboration, innovation, and best practices within the development team and across External Affairs (EA).





Key Responsibilities



+ Serve as a strategic advisor to the CAO and contribute to the overall vision and direction of Wharton External Affairs.


+ Provide thought leadership and guidance to design and implement effective donor relations and stewardship strategies.


+ Develop and mentor fundraising staff, fostering professional growth and high performance.


+ Utilize data-driven insights and reporting tools to optimize fundraising efforts.





Qualifications


The ideal candidate will have the following qualifications:



+ Education: An advanced degree is required


+ Experience: A minimum of 7-10 years of progressive experience in fundraising, preferably in higher education or a similarly complex environment, or an equivalent combination of education or experience is required. At least 10 years of experience is preferred.


+ Leadership Skills: Proven ability to lead and motivate large teams, set strategic priorities, and foster a collaborative culture.


+ Fundraising Expertise: Demonstrated success in securing significant gifts, managing donor portfolios, and implementing effective fundraising strategies.


+ Relationship Management: Exceptional interpersonal skills and the ability to build lasting relationships with donors, colleagues, and institutional leaders.


+ Analytical Thinking: Strong organizational, planning, and data analysis skills to inform decision-making and drive results.


+ Mission Alignment: A deep commitment to advancing Wharton’s mission and values.

Salary offers are made based on the candidate’s qualifications, experience, skills, and education as they directly relate to the requirements of the position, as well as internal and market factors and grade profile.
