Senior Civil Engineer
- Location: El Monte or Fontana, CA
- Salary: $150,000 - $190,000, DOE
- Work Schedule: Flexible - Can chose from 9/80 Schedule (Monday through Friday, every other Friday off), 5/40 Schedule (Monday through Friday), or 4/10 (Monday through Thursday)
JOB SUMMARY:
Under the direction of the Engineering Managers and Design Manager, supervises design team and oversees the preparation of construction drawings for the installation of new water facilities.
As a Senior Civil Engineer specializing in Water Resources Engineering, your job duties are explained in detail below:
- Designing Water Resource Infrastructures: You will be responsible for designing various water resource infrastructures such as reservoirs, booster stations, wells, pipelines, structural walls, and fences. This involves conducting feasibility studies, analyzing data, and creating detailed engineering plans.
- Collaborating with Other Civil Engineers: You will closely work with other civil engineers on water resource projects. This includes coordinating and collaborating with them to ensure the successful completion of projects. You will provide guidance, support, and technical expertise to the team.
- Training and Supervising Junior Engineers: As a Senior Engineer, you will be responsible for training and supervising junior engineers. This involves providing mentorship, guidance, and technical support to help them develop their skills and knowledge in water resources engineering. You will review their work, provide feedback, and ensure that projects are executed efficiently and effectively.
- Conducting Site Inspections: You will be required to conduct site inspections to assess the progress and quality of construction projects. This includes ensuring that the design specifications are being followed, identifying any potential issues or risks, and making necessary adjustments to the plans if required.
- Project Management: You will be responsible for managing water resource engineering projects from start to finish. This includes developing project schedules, coordinating resources, monitoring progress, and ensuring that projects are completed within budget and on time.
- Regulatory Compliance: You will need to ensure that all water resource infrastructure projects comply with relevant regulations, codes, and standards. This includes obtaining necessary permits and approvals, conducting environmental impact assessments, and addressing any regulatory requirements.

JOB DUTIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Responsible for a variety of tasks and duties, which may include, but would not be limited to, the following:
- Provide general supervision of design personnel, assigning of work, and overseeing all activities of the design team.
- Prepare detailed construction drawings for installation of mains, services, fire services, and fire hydrants
- Complete review and plan check of complicated designs including those for pipelines, booster stations, reservoirs, wells and treatment systems.
- Oversee the preparation of construction bid packages and project specifications.
- Prepare hydrology, hydraulic and low impact development reports.
- Prepare retaining wall calculations and prepare structural calculation reports.
- Coordinate with local governing agencies for permitting of projects to secure construction permits.
- Coordinate with consultants for design work to be completed and review pay requests.
- Attend meeting with consultants, local governing agencies or company staff to review design details or progress plans.
- Schedule weekly workloads and task prioritization for design team.
- Prepare monthly work schedule reports.
- Check the quality and compliance of the construction plans with San Gabriel and local standards.
- Assign job numbers for Los Angeles County division and request work orders.
- Assign and check the recording of as-built information on the original designs and input into the GIS database from completed construction drawings and service orders and enter completed as-builts into map library.
- Prepare advanced 3D renderings using the latest version of MicroStation or AutoCAD.
- Prepare advanced exhibits and create advanced queries using the latest version of ArcMap.
Skills, knowledge and physical requirements include, but are not limited to:
- Ability to supervise design personnel, assign work, and oversee all activities of the design team.
- Ability to counsel and provide first line of supervision; ability to persuade, convince, and train others.
- Ability to advise and provide interpretation regarding the application of policies, procedures and standards.
- Proficient in the latest version of MicroStation, AutoCAD Civil 3D, and ARC GIS software.
- Proficient in designing large scale water system projects utilizing computer-aided design and following technical specifications.
- Proficient in preparing advanced 3D renderings using the latest version of MicroStation or AutoCAD.
- Proficient in civil engineering design utilizing the latest version of MicroStation or AutoCAD.
- Ability to learn and keep up with new design technology.
- Good general mathematical ability.
- Thorough knowledge of the Standard Plans for Public Works Construction.
- Knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local laws, ordinances, codes, and regulations.
- Consistent in producing neat and accurate drawings.
- Knowledge of safety practices and procedures.
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing legibly.
- Ability to interact with supervisors, other employees, and the public in a cooperative and professional manner.
- Able to organize and schedule multiple tasks for and supervise engineering department design team staff.
- Able to effectively communicate critical information to others and supervisors, and interact positively with customers and others within the scope of work.
- Able to effectively resolve problems and understand the value of good service, and maintain a positive work environment.
- Must be dependable, punctual, and have a neat and presentable appearance.
- Ability to perform repetitive physical activities including walking, standing, sitting, reaching, bending, grasping, stooping, digging, climbing and lifting up to 50 lbs.
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE
The following are required:
- BS Degree in civil engineering and five years of experience in civil engineering with computer-aided design;
- Solid understanding of standard concepts, practices, and procedures within the water system;
- California Professional Engineering license required;
- Grades D2 Water Distribution Operator and T2 Water Treatment Operator certificates (Desirable);
- Valid California driver's license and acceptable driving record.
