Job Description
The Senior Director of Product Innovation is directly accountable for Mentor's internal and external product innovation strategy and pipeline (including internal and external). Key priority of this role is to enhance the pipeline value in line with business strategies. This position works closely with GSM, Clinical and Medical Affairs, Regulatory, and Quality to ensure all internal and external product development initiatives comply with applicable regulatory requirements and deliver on the most effective and efficient pathway to market.
Additionally, this role has accountability for the Life Cycle Management of an existing portfolio in market. It further interacts regularly with Operations and quality to develop and transfer new products and technologies into production and integrates the activities of Product Innovation with the Training, Sales, and Marketing functions to grow Mentor's commercial business.
Research & Development - Internal Innovation
• Accountable for working with Strategic Marketing, Clinical Affairs and Medical Affairs in key customer interactions, understanding the unmet needs of the Breast Aesthetic space and setting the right strategy and vision for Mentor's organic product innovation
• Ability to analyze and capitalize on predicted future market trends through internal research
• Creates long-range plans Product Innovation strategies and plans, including developing internal product innovation capabilities
• Develops and provides clear vision and strategy of short and long-term goals and objectives aligned with overall business priorities, research and development, budget, and resources.
• Manages the research and development of Implants and Expanders. Responsible for overseeing the seamless execution of internal innovation projects to timeline and budget, making strategic tradeoffs in collaboration with the Mentor Management Board
• Leads research and development leadership team and activities from early innovation and concept generation through scale up, validation and launch of new products to ensure deliverables are achieved
• Coach management and staff to monitor project progress, suggest corrective actions and contingency measures, and aid in issue and risk mitigation
• Assign, oversee and staff projects to execute against business goals and objectives
• Manages R&D compliance confirming adherence to regulatory, quality and business standards
• Ensures the establishment of R&D protocols, documentation and programs are of high quality
Research & Development - External Innovation
• Responsible for working with Strategic Marketing, Clinical Affairs and Medical Affairs in key customer interactions, understanding the unmet needs of the Breast Aesthetic space and setting the right strategy and vision for Mentor's inorganic product innovation
• Ability to analyze and capitalize on predicted future market trends through partnering with external stakeholders
• Creates long-range plans Product Innovation strategies and plans, including developing external product innovation capabilities
• Lead the search for external partners with new technology and to assess the innovation and strategic fit with licensing their technology including end-to-end partnering activities in Breast Aesthetics and complimentary adjacencies
• Work with business development as the R&D lead to evaluate opportunities, structure, and negotiate deals, take opportunities through internal governance processes, and execute transactions
Life Cycle Management
• Supports the existing in-market commercial products through life cycle management
• Oversees investigations, evaluations, and improvements of legacy commercial products
Leadership and Organization & Development
• Accountable for talent development, culture, and capability of reporting organization
• Oversee people management, succession planning and performance
• Delivers sustainable pipeline for the next generation of leaders
• Builds a diverse, inclusive, and engaged workforce and establish a plan for continuous development.
• Leads and coaches direct reports and influences the development of cross functional employees through mentorship and sponsorship
• Builds organizational capability and allocates appropriate resources to achieve growth goals.
• Conducts business activities in compliance with internal and external Heath, Safety & Environmental, ethics and legal regulations and policies Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities :
• Bachelor's degree in Mechanical/Biomedical or a related technical engineering field. Master's degree in an engineering discipline preferred
• Minimum 10 years of demonstrated leadership in the medical device technology industry or a related field
• Minimum 3 years of business development and external partnering in the medical device industry required
• Minimum 5 years of people management experience required including strong and proven people management and talent development skills
• Ability to interpret an extensive variety of abstract and concrete concepts and synthesize them into technical, financial, regulatory, and business solutions
• Knowledge of and compliance with applicable Quality System requirements (e.g., QSRs, ISO and MDD requirements)
• Strong written and verbal communication skills to communicate effectively at all levels
• Lead organizations through uncertainty and reset priorities based on new data
• Clearly communicate and influence executive management for resources, projects, ideas, etc.
• Able to make decisions based on limited data to move projects forward
• Specialized knowledge level, with sufficient experience and skill in techniques to independently
• Track record of determining how to set up and execute complex analysis.
• Required understanding and application of a theoretical or scientific discipline - including the underlying principles involved, as opposed to practices (e.g., chemistry).
• Applies standard practices and techniques in specific situations, adjusts and correlates data and follows operations through a series of detailed steps and processes.
• Experience with polymer-based manufacturing and/or device design preferred
• Proficient in Design Control both US and outside
