The Massachusetts League of Community Health Centers (Mass League), established in 1972, is one of the first state Primary Care Associations (PCAs) in the country. As a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization registered as a public charity, the Mass League supports community health centers across Massachusetts through advocacy, training, and technical assistance. Position Summary
The Senior Director (SD) of Communications & Public Affairs leads internal and external communications for the Mass League. Reporting to the Senior Vice President (SVP) of Development & External Affairs, the SD is responsible for developing and executing a strategic communications plan that raises the organization's visibility among key audiences, including foundations, corporations, health care policymakers, and health center patients and communities. This role also supports internal communications, provides technical assistance to member health centers, and manages press relations, media strategies, and special events.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and oversee the Mass League's communications plan, including social media strategies and press relations.
- Manage and develop content for Mass League's website, social media, newsletters, and reports.
- Collaborate with media to increase public awareness of health center initiatives and key healthcare issues.
- Support the Mass League's CEO, health center leaders, and staff in media engagements, including preparation and crisis communication.
- Draft and disseminate public testimony, official statements, and public relations materials.
- Develop fundraising proposals and communication materials in partnership with the SVP.
- Organize and lead public relations campaigns and press events, highlighting the impact of health centers and related initiatives.
- Provide technical support to health centers on press relations and special initiatives.
- Manage and mentor the Senior Manager of Communications.
Qualifications and Competencies
- Bachelor's degree required; advanced degree preferred.
- Extensive experience with public relations and press, including crisis communication and media relations.
- Knowledge of legislative and political processes and their impact on community health centers.
- Strong writing, analytical, and creative skills with the ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Familiarity with community health centers and their patient populations.
- Proficiency with software and platforms such as WordPress, SharePoint, Hootsuite, MailChimp, Asana, Salesforce/HubSpot, Adobe products, and social media tools.
