Job DescriptionAECOM is currently seeking a Senior Communications Systems Engineer with specialized skills in Rail and Transit Systems, to join our multidisciplinary West Coast Systems Engineering team and work on delivering an existing and future portfolio of projects.
JOB INFORMATION:
While the position is primarily for East San Fernando Valley Light Rail Transit Project, AECOM has an impressive backlog of significant transportation projects in the Greater Los Angeles area and transit/rail projects across West Region and provides exceptional opportunity for professional growth. This position is based out of our Downtown Los Angeles office location and allows for a hybrid working scenario including for in-office collaboration sessions as well as remote work.
JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Develop and review detailed Communications sub-system designs specific to Transportation systems such as fiber optic and IP backbone networks, radio systems, integrated communications systems, passenger information systems, telephony, CCTV, video, train control, intrusion and access control, SCADA, fire alarm systems, etc.
- Develop systemwide ductbank drawings by working in close coordination with respective system disciplines. Assist and provide working information to CAD for BIM clash detection.
- Provide value engineering on communications systems related issues saving costs and schedule.
- Produce system design deliverables such as block diagrams, riser diagrams, network diagrams, equipment layouts, cable schedules, bill of materials, radio and optical link budgets, and others.
- Generate design reports for all phases of system design. Author test procedures and reports in support of design verification and validation during the project life cycle.
- Produce Issued for Construction drawing and document packages.
- Support and participate in the Systems implementation phase of projects, such as installation, Testing & Commissioning, Cutover, Record Drawings and final reports.
- Support procurement efforts by authoring technical requirements and specifications, performing vendor bid evaluations and supporting vendor selection. Participate in the Requirements Management effort.
- Interface with other technical disciplines such as Power Supply & Distribution, Electrical, Mechanical, Structural, Architectural, Trackwork, Civil and others; including coordination and design of Systems interfaces, both physical and functional.
- Support the management of System Interfaces and creation of Interface Control Documents (ICDs). Lead technical interactions with clients, operators, and other major stakeholders.
- Manage and lead Systems vendors until final delivery. Manage and deliver technical training of client staff. Support the authoring of project plan documents. Support cost estimates, project schedules and budgets. Perform technical review of other team members’ designs.
- Participate in project pursuit efforts.
- Provide guidance and mentorship to junior personnel as part of team development.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
- Bachelor’s degree in relevant engineering discipline + 8 years of related experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- 5 years or more of experience in rail and transit systems.
- California Professional Engineer License is preferred, but not required.
- Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related discipline is preferred, but not required.
- Proficient in AutoCAD/other CAD software.
- Experience with transit systems in North America. Experience in Owner’s Engineer role.
- Experience in design of one or more of the following: IP backbone networks, integrated communications system, passenger information systems, telephony, SCADA, guideway and track intrusion detection, fence intrusion detection, fire and life safety systems.
- BIM 360 knowledge
- Experience participating in Interface Management, Testing & Commissioning, Cutover, and Operations & Maintenance.
- Working knowledge of codes and standards applicable to rail projects such as NFPA 130, EN 50121 and others.
- Accustomed to operating within a multi-disciplinary project structure with responsibility for Communications sub-systems design.
- Self-motivated and able to work with limited direct supervision.
- Able to lead discussions with senior project staff, partners, clients and suppliers.
- Able to multitask due to concurrent projects.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
