Job Description
The Fabrication Technology (FT) unit manages several laboratories across the Bettis site that support fundamental materials research and material fabrication development. To support this effort, the team is seeking a hands-on engineer/scientist to manage and operate these labs. This is a dynamic position that will require the candidate to work side by side with technicians, engineers, as well as management and interact with NNL's regulatory organizations to maintain compliance. Success in this role requires knowledge in hands-on operation of thermal analysis equipment, as well as operation of lab-scale furnaces and other general laboratory equipment. The successful candidate will train lab users in the use of the lab facilities and cognizant equipment as well as manage users' access to the labs. Candidate will also be responsible for waste evaluation, chemical procurement, and general compliance activities. The successful candidate will also be expected to assume responsibility for technical deliverables for on-going development work.
Key Responsibilities:
• Maintain and develop procedures for safe laboratory operations.
• Operate Thermal Analysis equipment including training of new users.
• Manage access and training for a Vault Type Room (VTR) lab.
• Collaborate with teams from CMMI, Core Manufacturing, and Bettis Engineering.
• Manage maintenance contract(s) for thermal analysis and other lab equipment.
• Keep chemical inventory and train Waste Generators.
• Maintain and revise the Process Evaluation List
• Actively participate in operations surveillance programs within the unit and across TEC.
• Participate in internal and NR audits of the labs.
Required Combination of Knowledge and Skill
Preferred Skills
• Proficiency on Netzsch Thermal Analysis equipment and software.
• Knowledge/Experience with vacuum furnace operations.
• Knowledge of analytical characterization techniques.
• Knowledge or experience in waste characterization and disposition.
• Able to perform minor maintenance/modifications on lab equipment.
• Qualified (or able to) as a Waste Chemical Representative (WCR) and Service Contract Work Administrator (SCWA).
• Attention to detail in lab experimentation and documentation.
• Experience with participation in multi-disciplinary teams.
• Excellent written and oral communication.

Pay Range
