Position Summary
About the Group and Role
The firm has an impressive roster of clients in this sector and the Retail & Consumer Goods ‘diagonal’ group has recently been created in order to fully leverage the firm’s collective capabilities and go to market with a well-defined proposition. The group is called a ‘diagonal’ because it comprises partners and lawyers from across many industry and practice groups, as well as across many offices. There are two co-leaders of this group – one based in Pittsburgh and the other in San Francisco. The primary focus is on several key sub-sectors including Fashion & Luxury Brands, Food & Beverage, Restaurants & Food Service, Retail Pharmacy and Consumer Goods.
This is a new role and will require someone who is self-motivated and has the passion and drive to make things happen. As mentioned, this group is newly formed, so will need support establishing a presence in the market, getting the group leads to coalesce around common goals and developing a strategic plan for the team. Experience in this sector in a law firm or professional services environment would be preferred.Essential Functions
- Interact with group leaders and other key attorneys to execute on the strategic priorities of the group; develop strong working relationships and maintain a high level of day-to-day interaction with lawyers.
- Analyze and assess market developments, identify and follow through with emerging new business opportunities.
- Assist in the development of agendas and presentations for group strategy meetings; prepare and circulate meeting summaries to report on progress towards action and goals.
- Coordinate pitch materials, presentations and responses to Requests for Proposals; review and edit content where necessary; support the development and maintenance of proposal content and capabilities. Ensure follow up is sought from prospect post pitch; track and act on actions which arise; assess how feedback can be used to enhance win rate.
- Identify and pursue opportunities to develop new and existing clients as well as proactively seeking out ways to cross sell into the wider Reed Smith business.
- Design and implement thought leadership and content plans including for blogs, social media, webinars, podcasts.
- Coordinate contributions and input related to attorney experience and client information into business development systems including CRM and Foundation.
- Draft, edit and maintain marketing collateral, including practice area descriptions and attorney biographies; facilitate posting updates to firm website and intranet as needed.
- Collate content for internal newsletters and marketing campaigns to drive awareness throughout the firm of the group's capabilities and experience.
- Prepare and draft submissions for major awards and legal directories to further the awarness and positioning of the group; maintain repositories of practice group accolades and awards.
- Plan, coordinate and execute small, medium and large scale events such as seminars, roundtables and receptions.
- Ensure all marketing communications channels are exploited to convey consistent messages about the group and its experience, including the use of social media in consultation with the digital team. Work with our communications and media staff to identify and pursue PR opportunities in key legal trade and industry publications and industry surveys.
- Support strategy for brand positioning efforts, including the management of conference sponsorships, client presentations, seminars and webinars.

Requirements
Education: College degree in Marketing, Business, Communications or related field required.
Experience: 3-5 years' experience in a marketing related field required, including at least one year of business development experience and demonstrated project leadership. Law firm or professional services experience preferred. Previous marketing, public relations, events or media experience a plus, as well as an interest in and ability to understand the legal business environment, including industry terminology. Must have demonstrated experience working independently as well as within cross-functional teams in a collaborative, professional environment.
Skills:
- Strong computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite software.
- Technologically savvy and able to quickly learn new database systems.
- Extremely detail oriented, proactive and self-directed with ability to independently manage and appropriately prioritize multiple projects and competing priorities under tight deadlines, sometimes with minimal oversight.
- Able to demonstrate sound professional judgement and a high degree of poise and professionalism when interact with internal and external contacts.
- Comfortable establishing effective firmwide working relationships with individuals at all levels.
- Possess, and be willing to continue to develop, strong organizational, project management and problem solving skills.
- Able to work independently as well as part of a team, and be flexible in approach.

Typical Physical Demands: Manual dexterity sufficient to operate standard office equipment.

Working Conditions: You will be required to work in the office at minimum 3 days per week. The details of your weekly schedule will be discussed further with your direct supervisor.
