The Senior Bookkeeper will be responsible for managing a team of 3-6 bookkeepers. This role involves overseeing day-to-day bookkeeping operations, ensuring accuracy in financial records, and delivering timely reports for a diverse client portfolio. The successful candidate will coach and mentor team members, ensure adherence to accounting standards, and foster a collaborative environment. You will also act as a liaison between the bookkeeping team and other departments, such as accounting and tax preparation. This role will include some client-focused efforts as well, requiring strong organizational skills and attention to detail. This role will report to the Tax & Accounting Leader within Aardvark Tax Advisors.
Key Responsibilities
Team Leadership:
- Manage and lead a team of 3-5 bookkeepers, providing guidance, mentorship, and performance feedback.
- Oversee the delegation and completion of bookkeeping tasks to ensure deadlines are met.
- Train new hires and support continuous professional development within the team.
- Conduct regular check-ins to monitor workload, team morale, and overall performance.
Operational Oversight:
- Review the accuracy and completeness of financial transactions processed by team members, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, bank reconciliations, and payroll.
- Ensure timely preparation and review of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements (income statements, balance sheets, cash flow statements) for clients.
- Support the team in resolving complex client issues and bookkeeping challenges, acting as the primary escalation point.
Client Relationship Management:
- Serve as the primary point of contact for high-level client inquiries, offering expertise and strategic advice on bookkeeping-related matters.
- Collaborate with clients to understand their financial needs and ensure that services align with their business goals.
- Ensure that the team delivers exceptional service, building strong, long-term relationships with clients.
Quality Control & Process Improvement:
- Maintain high standards for financial accuracy and compliance with legal and practice policies.
- Implement and monitor best practices to improve the efficiency and accuracy of bookkeeping processes.
- Stay informed about the latest bookkeeping technology, software updates, and industry trends, ensuring the team adopts tools to enhance performance.
Collaboration with Senior Leadership:
- Work closely with senior accountants, tax preparers, and management to ensure seamless coordination between bookkeeping and other services.
- Provide insights and recommendations to leadership on operational improvements and team development.
- Prepare detailed reports and summaries for senior management on team performance, client satisfaction, and key financial data.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
- 4+ years of bookkeeping experience, including at least 1-2 years in a supervisory or team leadership role.
- Proficiency in accounting software such as QuickBooks, Xero, or similar platforms.
- Strong understanding of accounting principles, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, general ledger management, and financial reporting.
- Excellent leadership, organizational, and communication skills.
- Proven ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
Preferred Skills
- Experience in a tax or accounting firm.
- Familiarity with payroll processing and compliance.
- Knowledge of US tax laws and regulations.
- Certification in bookkeeping or accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks Certified User).
