Job Title: Senior Accountant
Job Summary:
The Senior Accountant will play a critical role in managing the day-to-day accounting operations of the company. This position is responsible for ensuring accurate financial reporting, maintaining compliance with industry and tax regulations, and delivering timely and precise financial data. The role also includes analyzing project costs, assisting in budget preparation, and working closely with other departments to ensure smooth financial processes. This is a hands-on position, ideal for a detail-oriented professional who thrives in a fast-paced, project-based environment. The ideal candidate will be looking to take the next step in their career and wants to grow alongside the Company - this role will have the inside track for eventual promotion to Controller as the Company grows.
Key Responsibilities:
Accounting Operations
- Oversee daily accounting operations, including general ledger entries, account reconciliations, check runs, and month-end closing processes.
- Manage accounts payable to ensure invoices are being coded to the correct GL accounts and are being paid timely.
- Manage accounts receivable to ensure accurate and timely billing and collections.
- Assist with payroll processing, ensuring proper classification of employees and compliance with wage laws.
Financial Reporting and Compliance
- Maintain accurate job costing records, tracking expenses and revenues for individual projects.
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local tax regulations, including contractor-specific requirements.
Budgeting and Forecasting Support
- Assist in preparing the annual budget and periodic forecasts, ensuring alignment with project timelines and financial goals.
- Analyze financial data to identify cost-saving opportunities and recommend process improvements.
- Support variance analysis by comparing actual results to budgeted expectations.
Internal Controls and Process Improvement
- Help establish and maintain internal controls to ensure accurate financial reporting and prevent discrepancies.
- Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes and implement best practices to enhance efficiency.
- Work with the accounting team to streamline workflows and leverage financial software tools.
Collaboration and Support
- Collaborate with project managers to provide financial insights and ensure accurate tracking of project-related costs.
- Act as a liaison between the accounting department and other departments, ensuring smooth financial communication.
- Provide mentorship and guidance to junior accounting staff as needed.
- Ad hoc projects assigned by management, as required.
Requirements:
- Education: Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field. CPA or progress toward certification is a plus.
- Experience: 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, with construction or project-based industry experience preferred.
- Strong knowledge of GAAP, job costing, and financial reporting requirements.
- Experience with financial software systems (e.g., Spectrum, Sage, or similar).
Skills:
- Strong analytical and organizational skills with high attention to detail.
- Proficiency in Excel and other financial tools for reporting and analysis.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with a team.
Competencies:
- Proactive problem-solver with a focus on accuracy and meeting deadlines.
- Strong understanding of project-based accounting, including WIP and cost tracking.
- Ability to multitask and adapt to changing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
