Specialist Business Analyst (Research Informatics) - Small Molecule Discovery
What you will do

In this vital role you will based out of our site in South San Francisco to support the informatics needs of our global small molecule therapeutics discovery research organization at Amgen. In this role, you will bridge the gap between scientists and R&D Technology to ensure that informatics solutionssuch as cheminformatics platforms, AI-driven tools, and data analysis platformsenhance drug discovery processes and meet evolving team needs. You will collaborate closely with multidisciplinary teams of scientists, and engineers, to implement technology/ data solutions that enable small molecule design, synthesis, testing, and analytics.
Your Key Responsibilities:
Requirements Gathering: Partner with medicinal, analytical, and computational chemists to understand their needs and define informatics system requirements that support molecular analysis, compound synthesis, and screening workflows, including AI-driven molecule design and property prediction tools.
System Implementation: Lead or assist with the deployment of chemistry-focused informatics tools, including cheminformatics software (e.g., ChemDraw, ChemAxon, Schrdinger), AI tools for drug design, Electronic Lab Notebooks (ELN), Laboratory Information Management Systems (LIMS), and compound registration systems.
Cheminformatics & Data Integration: Facilitate seamless integration of chemical structure data, experimental results, external databases, and property predictions into cohesive systems for research teams, ensuring structure normalization to support data consistency.
AI Integration for Molecule Design: Implement and manage AI and machine learning tools that support the design of novel molecules, predict their chemical properties, and enhance structure-activity relationship (SAR) analysis.
Data Visualization: Use platforms such as Spotfire, Tableau, Plotly Dash, etc., to build interactive dashboards that enable scientists to visualize and analyze complex chemical and experimental data, facilitating data-driven decisions in research workflows.
Process Optimization: Identify opportunities to improve workflows related to compound synthesis, SAR analysis, and chemical inventory tracking, using AI-driven insights and data visualization tools.
Documentation: Create and maintain clear and detailed documentation for system requirements, business processes, data flows, system configurations, and user guides.
Collaboration & Communication: Act as a bridge between research teams, technology teams, and vendors to align system functionalities with user needs and manage project expectations. Foster collaboration with diverse teams including chemists, data scientists, and software engineers.
Training & Support: Deliver training programs for chemists and researchers on cheminformatics platforms, AI tools, data visualization platforms, ELNs, LIMS, and data analysis tools.
Testing & Compliance: Oversee test plans to ensure chemistry informatics and AI solutions meet specifications and support scientific teams while adhering to Amgen standards.
Project Management: Support chemistry-focused informatics projects, including defining scope, resources, timelines, and ensuring successful project outcomes.

Basic Qualifications:
Doctorate degree
OR
Masters degree and 2 years of Chemistry, Cheminformatics, Life Sciences, Chemical Engineering, Information Systems experience
Or
Bachelors degree and 4 years of Chemistry, Cheminformatics, Life Sciences, Chemical Engineering, Information Systems experience
Or
Associates degree and 8 years of Chemistry, Cheminformatics, Life Sciences, Chemical Engineering, Information Systems experience
Or
High school diploma / GED and 10 years of Chemistry, Cheminformatics, Life Sciences, Chemical Engineering, Information Systems experience
Preferred Qualifications:
Scientific Domain Expertise: Strong background in chemistry or cheminformatics; Expertise in the design-make-test-analyze cycle of small molecule drug discovery.
Chemistry Software Knowledge: Familiarity with registration systems, molecular modeling tools, and data analysis platforms used in medicinal chemistry workflows; Hands-on experience using or supporting chemistry software used in drug discovery research.
AI Use Cases:Experience in AI and machine learning for molecule design, property predictions, and integration with cheminformatics tools.
Data Integration: Expertise in integrating chemistry data, experimental results, and external databases, ensuring efficient data management and accessibility across research teams.
Data Visualization:Knowledge of data visualization platforms such as Spotfire, Tableau, Plotly Dash, etc. to create intuitive, interactive visualizations of chemical and biological data.
Agile Methodologies: Experience with Agile methodologies, including managing product backlogs using tools like Jira.
Collaboration: Proven ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams of chemists, biologists, computational scientists, software engineers, and vendors to drive successful informatics implementations.
Skills:
Problem-Solving: Strong analytical skills with the ability to troubleshoot complex technology and data challenges.
Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to present complex technical information to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Business Analysis and Project Management: Demonstrated experience in managing informatics projects, eliciting requirements, prioritizing tasks, and ensuring timely delivery of solutions.

The expected annual salary range for this role in the U.S. (excluding Puerto Rico) is posted. Actual salary will vary based on several factors including but not limited to, relevant skills, experience, and qualifications.
