Enjoy teaching STEAM outdoors? Trail Guides get to do things discuss ecology on oak covered trails before heading to the STEM Center to launch bottle rockets and play with oobleck. If this sounds purposeful to you, take a look at the Irvine Ranch Outdoor Education Center. We are centrally located in Orange, CA with on-site housing and great people to work with.
Program season starts in September 2024. Interviews will begin July 15, 2024.
Projected start date: September 2, 2024 Projected end date: December 20, 2024 (opportunity to stay for following seasons as well)
Wage:
· $16-18.50/hour (Average biweekly pay $1190*).
· End of season bonus up to $500 based on season completion and hours worked.
· On-site housing and meals can save over $6400** during Fall season
GENERAL
The Outdoor Science Camp Trail Guide leads campers through activities ranging from hands-on science experiments, nature journaling, ecology hikes, and more while maintaining safety and program integrity. Trail Guides should enjoy working with youth, appreciate the outdoors, and follow the IROEC and Scouting America Missions (see below).
RESPONSIBILITIES
· Guide elementary school campers through trails and programs
· Maintain a positive learning environment in a variety of settings, outdoor & in
· Initiate games to play with your campers & be interested in who they are as people
· Lead songs, skits, and large group games
· Demonstrate knowledge and curiosity about California's ecosystems, or be willing to learn and teach these topics
· Lead discussions about S.T.E.M. principles with campers
· Work with your team to promote positive behavior and culture
· Assist with equipment inventory & maintenance
· Make sure safety protocols are followed in accordance with American Camp Association and Scouting America.
· Perform other duties as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS
· Must be able to fulfill the essential requirements of the position
· Must be at least 18 years old.
· Ability to work a varying work schedule including weekdays and evenings
· Ability to work independently, while adhering to a fast-paced daily schedule
· Has or is willing to obtain certification in Red Cross (or another approved vendor) Adult and Pediatric First Aid, CPR, and AED within 30 days of employment
PREFERRED
· Degree or pursuing a degree in a field relating to education, psychology, STEAM, ecology, OR equivalent relevant work experience
· Demonstrated experience working with children in an organized educational or recreational setting
· Bilingual

The mission of the Irvine Ranch Outdoor Education Center is to serve youth by providing outdoor educational opportunities that instill in them an appreciation of the outdoors and the environment, teach effective teamwork, instruct about the cultural history of Orange County, and provide access to the natural resources of the surrounding areas.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
The Outdoor Science Camp Trail Guide position is at the Irvine Ranch Outdoor Education Center (IROEC). Working in a camp environment includes providing customer service, solving problems, and cooperation with others, regardless of your title. Working at the IROEC specifically requires a desire to develop and work with youth, which can occasionally lead to challenging interactions.
