JOB DESCRIPTION
POSITION TITLE: SCHOOL NURSE
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Registered Nurse licensed in State of Kentucky
2. Certified in basic life support
REPORTS TO: Superintendent and Principals
RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Administer first aid or nursing care for injuries, diseases and illnesses to students and school employees as needed. Be available for emergency calls to schools where it is desirable for her to administer to accident victims.
2. Conduct height, weight, vision, hearing, scoliosis screenings as mandated. Provide head lice screening as needed. Observe students on a regular basis to monitor health needs.
3. Refer students for follow-up care to physicians, clinics, other resources and other appropriate personnel.
4. Monitor and maintain health records, medication logs; update student records as needed; prepare and submit periodical medical reports to appropriate agency and assure compliance with established laws and regulations.
5. Dispenses and retains medication, supervises the administration of medicine during school hours, maintains medication records and assure compliance with established laws and regulations.
6. Maintain supply of first aid supplies, assure medical equipment is in proper working condition; order supplies and equipment as needed.
7. Assist the principals and school secretaries in establishing, developing and maintaining first aid facilities and emergency care procedures.
8. Authorizes exclusion and readmission of students with infectious and contagious disease in compliance with state regulations and local board policies.
9. Maintain current knowledge of medical advances and information, public health issues and treatment procedures.
10. Maintains up-to-date cumulative health records on all students in compliance with state regulations and local board policies.
11. Refer students to appropriate personnel, resources or clinics and follow-up as necessary. Serve as a liaison to physicians, clinics and other agencies on students’ medical matters.
12. Perform nursing procedures on students as prescribed by physician.
13. Develop program plans for nursing procedures and conducts training for school personnel.
14. Supervise the reporting of any known or suspected communicable disease cases to the health department.
15. Assist school personnel in meeting the requirements of the school health code pertaining to school employee medical examinations. Assist in setting up physical exams for special student groups.
16. Apply all school and district policies and procedures.
17. Communicate effectively with students, staff, and community.
18. Perform various other duties as assigned by supervisor.
