About the Job
Reports to the Manager, School Nurse Program. Provides school health services as directed by the School Nurse to the student population serviced. Assists and supports the School Nurse with administering appropriate care or referral for ill and/or injured students, performs documentation and student record keeping activities, and maintains correspondence with parents/guardians, school officials, and allied professionals. Assists the Principal and School Nurse with general activities of managing the school medical office.

Assists and supports the School Nurse with administering care to ill and/or injured students in accordance with established policies and procedure by:
- Assisting in performing health assessments and mandated screening (i.e., vision, dental, hearing, height and weight variation, etc.) of each child at the school.
- Administering and documenting first aid and medications given to students according to physician's or nurse's instructions, with parental written consent, to meet immediate health care needs.
- Providing immediate response to students who need emergency medical treatment. Contacts appropriate emergency response resources as situation dictates.
- Referring students requiring further medical attention/treatment (i.e., medical/dental treatment, counseling, further assessment) to the School Nurse.
- Maintaining and updating electronic health records of students.
- Distributes information on medical treatments under supervision of the School Nurse (i.e., lice, ringworm, drug prevention, personal hygiene, etc.) for informing teachers, students and/or parents on a variety of health subjects.
- Reports students with contagious diseases to the School Nurse for reporting to the local public health authorities for the purpose of minimizing infection and complying with the law.
Performs other functions to maintain personal competence and contribute to the overall effectiveness of the department by:
- Assists the Principal and School Nurse in managing the school medical office by providing recordkeeping and clerical support (copying, faxing, data entry, etc.).
- Cleans work areas (utilizing universal precaution procedures) for the purpose of maintaining a sanitary environment.
- Completing other job-related duties and projects as assigned.
Associate complies with the following organizational requirements:
- Attends and participates in department meetings and is accountable for all information shared.
- Completes mandatory education, annual competencies and department specific education within established timeframes.
- Completes annual employee health requirements within established timeframes.
- Maintains license/certification, registration in good standing throughout fiscal year.
- Direct patient care providers are required to maintain current BCLS (CPR) and other certifications as required by position/department.
- Consistently utilizes appropriate universal precautions, protective equipment, and ergonomic techniques to protect patient and self.
- Adheres to regulatory agency requirements, survey process and compliance.
- Complies with established organization and department policies.
- Available to work overtime in addition to working additional or other shifts and schedules when required.

Education and Experience
- The knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated below are normally acquired through the successful completion of a high school diploma or equipment. Certified Nursing Assistant or Home Health Aide certification is preferred. Previous experience working in a school environment and with children is preferred. Must have and maintain current CPR certification. A valid driver's license and a good driving record are required.
Knowledge & Skills
- Requires ability to read and comprehend written materials with medical terminology.
- Requires knowledge of and a competency in performing patient care procedures and functions and uses of equipment. Must own a watch to perform charting functions.
- Must pass skill validations on obtaining vital signs, passing medications and performing other clinical tasks as necessary with proper training and competency testing.
- Demonstrates analytical skills necessary to solve problems and interpret data.
- Demonstrates the interpersonal and communication skills (both verbal and written) necessary to interact effectively with a wide variety of contacts including principals, students, families, and community members; also to report and record patient related information accurately and appropriately.
- Requires strong documentation and organization skills to multi-task and maintain electronic health records of students.
- Demonstrates evidence of physical health and physical exam upon hire and as needed. Must complete annual TB test.
- Demonstrates proficiency in basic computer skills (i.e., data entry, word processing and spreadsheets).
- Must have working phone and/or pager to maintain contact with agency.
- Requires a valid driver's license, access to a vehicle, and proof of automobile liability insurance coverage.
Working Conditions
- Works in an office or school environment.
- Travel within the SBCSC district is required.
Physical Demands
- Requires physical ability and stamina to perform the essential functions of the position.
