Work Location
This role is primarily remote, with travel as needed. Candidates residing in states where we operate—Washington (WA), Oregon (OR), or California (CA)—are preferred. Exceptional candidates from other locations may also be considered, with relocation support available if needed.
Candidate Profile
San Francisco AIDS Foundation (SFAF) seeks a visionary and emotionally intelligent leader to serve as its next Chief Financial Officer (CFO). This pivotal role requires a strategic thinker with deep expertise in financial management and a profound commitment to SFAF’s mission of promoting health, wellness, and social justice for communities most impacted by HIV.
We are seeking a dynamic leader who can build upon the current foundation while addressing the opportunities that come with organizational change. The ideal candidate will possess the vision and skills necessary to strengthen internal structures and foster growth and innovation. As CFO, you will navigate complex financial landscapes while staying grounded in the core values of Justice, Dignity, Courage, Leadership, and Excellence. Your decisions will balance financial acumen with empathy as you lead with integrity, inspire trust, and foster collaboration across diverse teams, all while ensuring the organization’s financial sustainability.
Reporting directly to the CEO, the CFO will provide strategic oversight of SFAF’s financial, business, and compliance activities, developing both short and long-range financial plans to secure the organization’s future. You will oversee finance, budgeting, and accounting functions, leading the annual budget process, managing the investment portfolio, and implementing robust financial controls and procedures. With a Finance Department comprising eight full-time staff, including a Controller and an Associate Vice President of Financial Planning and Analysis, you will be tasked with guiding the team through periods of significant change, including the implementation of a new finance operations system in your first year.
As a member of the Executive Team, you will regularly engage with the Board of Directors, serving as the liaison to the Finance and Audit, Risk, and Compliance Committees. You will also collaborate closely with the Philanthropy and Business Development departments to strengthen revenue generation efforts, annual fundraising events, third-party billing infrastructure, and the 340B Pharmacy Program. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of leading functions beyond finance and accounting, showcasing a proactive approach, future-focused thinking, and a relentless commitment to transparency and accountability. You will not only manage the financial health of SFAF but also contribute to shaping a culture that values equity, inclusivity, and continuous improvement. Your leadership will be pivotal in guiding SFAF through exciting and transformative periods, ensuring the organization remains agile and resilient in its pursuit of health justice for all.
Key Responsibilities
- Strategic Financial Leadership: Develop and implement short- and long-term financial strategies to ensure the organization's financial health and sustainability. Lead the organization’s financial planning processes, including the development of annual budgets and multi-year financial projections.
- Financial Management & Compliance: Oversee all aspects of financial management, including accounting, budgeting, financial reporting, and investment management. Ensure compliance with legal, regulatory, and best practice standards. Implement and maintain robust internal controls and financial policies.
- Team Leadership: Lead, mentor, and develop the Finance Department, which includes eight full-time staff members, including the Controller and the Associate Vice President of Financial Planning and Analysis. Foster a culture of accountability, excellence, and continuous improvement.
- Technology and Systems Implementation: Oversee the selection, implementation, and management of a new financial operations system to enhance financial reporting, operational efficiency, and strategic decision-making.
- Board and Executive Engagement: Serve as a key member of the Executive Team, presenting financial updates to the Board of Directors and serving as the staff liaison to the Finance and Audit, Risk, and Compliance Committees. Collaborate with the CEO and other senior leaders to align financial strategies with organizational goals.
- Partnership Development: Work closely with the Philanthropy and Business Development departments to support revenue generation initiatives, including annual fundraising events, third-party billing infrastructure, and the 340B Pharmacy Program.
Qualifications
- Education and Experience: A minimum of ten years of senior financial management experience is required, preferably within the nonprofit sector or a healthcare setting. A bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or a related field is required. An advanced degree (e.g., MBA) and/or CPA designation is strongly preferred.
- Leadership and Strategic Thinking: Proven ability to provide strategic financial leadership in a complex organization. Demonstrated experience leading during times of significant organizational change and growth.
- Technical Proficiency: Experience in implementing new technology systems and enhancing organizational processes. Expertise in financial analysis, budgeting, forecasting, and investment management.
- Commitment to Mission: Authentic dedication to SFAF’s mission, with experience or a strong understanding of issues related to health justice, HIV prevention, and the communities most impacted by HIV. Experience working in or with organizations focused on social justice, racial equity, and public health is highly valued.
- Communication and Relationship Building: Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with staff, executives, Board members, and external stakeholders. Demonstrated ability to build and maintain positive, productive relationships across diverse groups.
- Strategic Vision and Execution: Ability to develop and articulate a clear financial vision that aligns with SFAF’s mission and values. Capacity to balance the need for innovation with organizational readiness and realistic implementation plans.
- Results-Driven: Proven track record of setting and achieving ambitious goals. Ability to lead teams through ambiguity and complex challenges, maintaining focus on outcomes.
- Integrity and Accountability: High ethical standards and integrity, with a transparent and consistent approach to decision-making. Ability to act decisively and responsibly under pressure.
- Team Leadership and Development: Demonstrated ability to inspire, motivate, and develop high-performing teams. Commitment to fostering an inclusive, equitable, and collaborative workplace culture.
- Cultural Competence: Ability to understand and address issues of racial/ethnic biases and work effectively with people from diverse backgrounds. Commitment to advancing equitable outcomes and centering marginalized communities in the organization’s work.
Compensation: $235,000-$255,000 depending on experience and qualifications. Offering generous and comprehensive benefits.
