Job Summary: The Safety Specialist is responsible for ensuring compliance with health and safety regulations set forth by local, state, and federal agencies. They will collaborate closely with management to maintain and improve risk management practices within established standards.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Oversee all safety programs within the organization.
- Monitor, train, and audit compliance with EPA and OSHA regulations.
- Review and update safety training materials.
- Conduct training sessions for both production employees and management.
- Develop and implement strategies to enhance safety compliance.
- Participate in safety committee meetings, inspections, and audits.
- Conduct compliance audits, incident investigations, root cause analyses, and develop corrective action plans.
- Perform job hazard analysis to improve ergonomics and prevent soft tissue injuries.
- Participate in internal audits to ensure compliance with OSHA standards, company policies, and procedures.
- Ensure adherence to safety work rules and procedures throughout the plant.
- Provide assistance during emergency situations.
- Stay updated on new safety methods, procedures, and regulations.
- Act as a member of the facility's HazMat team.
- Maintain flexibility in scheduling to cover staff absences and emergencies.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Safety Manager.
Qualification Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field preferred (safety, ergonomics, physical sciences), plus 3-5 years of experience working with OSHA standards, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to effectively manage time and meet deadlines.
- Proficiency in reading and interpreting documents in English.
- Strong mathematical skills for practical applications.
- Problem-solving abilities and the capacity to interpret various instructions.
- Proficiency in computer usage, including standard industry programs, and the ability to learn new software as needed.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Valid driver’s license due to potential business travel.
Physical Demands:
- Ability to move about the facility and perform various physical tasks.
- Regular standing, walking, use of hands, reaching, stooping, kneeling, and speaking.
- Occasional lifting and moving of moderate to heavy objects.
- Specific vision abilities including close vision, color vision, depth perception, and focus adjustment.
- Capability to participate in the facility’s HazMat team.
Work Environment:
- Regular exposure to varying temperatures and humidity levels.
- Frequent proximity to moving mechanical parts.
- Occasional exposure to fumes, airborne particles, temperature extremes, and vibrations.
- High noise levels typical of plant operations.
